Surrey Lookup Requests / Re: Birth of Winifred May Spearing
« on: Sunday 15 June 25 21:08 BST (UK)  »
Winifred Spearing was born in an age well before my time. When I asked for further information about her birth circumstances, it was possible that the RootsChat experts had come across similar stories to those of Winifred's mother, Bessie. I am an optimistic rather than pessimistic person. So I give Bessie the benefit of the doubt and view her as a reliable and hard working domestic employee. Consequently, the St. Loe Strachey family would have ensured that Bessie was well cared for during the birth of her daughter and for the subsequent safe return of mother and baby to Somerset.

Thank you for your postings, Marquessate,

William James Spearing was indeed the registered father of Winifred Spearing. The marriage of Bessie Look to William Spearing lasted many years as is indicated by the six children that followed after Winifred who was the eldest. William returned from Ireland in 1920 and became gamekeeper on the Kingweston estate, living at Barton St David in Somerset.

Surrey Lookup Requests / Birth of Winifred May Spearing

I am seeking more information on the life of Bessie (baptised as Bessy) Look, born in 1874 in the Frome area of Somerset. Also some information about her daughter, Winifred May Spearing, who, after her marriage to Arthur Henry Locke, lived in Somerset. I have details of Winifred's life as a teenager but I am particularly interested in the circumstances of her birth which do not follow the same pattern as that of her siblings. Winifred was born on 31 March 1903 in the district of Chelsea, sub-district Chelsea South. It is likely that, about the time of her birth, her mother, Bessie, was living in London at 27 Pont Street, Chelsea. Bessie was a ladies maid to the wife of John St. Loe Strachey, a Newspaper Proprietor (of the Spectator, father of John Strachey MP). From census records Bessy was living there in 1901. As far as I can ascertain, soon after Winifred's birth, both mother and baby returned to Somerset.
It looks, suspiciously, that someone in the household of the Strachey family, or living nearby, was Winifred's father. (This in contrast to her siblings whose father was William James Spearing.) Hence the support for Winifred's mother during her birth. Unlikely to be proven but a closer knowledge of the birth circumstances is of interest to me.
Thank you.

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Re: Frank Penny census records

My thanks to the Marquesses Boo and John for expanding my knowledge of Frank Penny and Rose May Jones. Frank Penny, in a family letter (of which I have a copy) to my ancestor Lucy Penny mentions that he had very good lodgings in 1955 at 25 Allfarthing Lane describing himself 'as like one of the family'.

On 9th November 1955 Frank Penny was living at 25 Allfarthing Lane, Wandsworth, London SW18. He was married, his wife died in1942 (forenames not known). Formerly a steel erector but because of bad health (gassed in WW1) he took a lighter job.

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Frank Penny census records

I would like to know more about Frank Penny (born 11 October 1899 in Kensington) who died aged 70 in 1969 in Kensington. I have a family letter from him to his sister Lucy Ann Locke (nee Penny) dated 9th November 1955. I have posted other information about his siblings elsewhere on RootsChat
I am interested as to where he was living, from UK census records, between 1955 until his death in 1969.
Thanks for any help.

Somerset Lookup Requests / Re: Henry PENNY & Jessie ROWLAND family
« on: Friday 23 July 21 16:50 BST (UK)  »
Here is some supporting evidence about the Penny family sent to me some years ago by Dr. Barnado's about Alma Clara Penny and her siblings. It establishes that Frank was not sent by them to Canada as a boy.

Alma was admitted to Barnardo's care on 29th August 1906. Her date of birth is shown as 3rd August 1895 at Chilton Cantelo, Somerset. Her father is not named but is said to have died on 6th December 1905. Her mother is named as Jenny (sic) Penny, aged 44, and living at 160 Penarth Road, Cardiff. It is stated her parents married on 24th July 1881 at West Camel, Somerset.

Her brothers are named as Henry, aged 22, collier in Rhondda Valley; Edwin, aged 21, a soldier but later living in Canada; Albert, aged 19, soldier; Silas, aged 16, dairyman's assistant in Weymouth; Ernest, aged 15, farm lad in Dorset; Reginald, aged 9; and Frank, aged 6; both with mother.
Her sisters are named as Mary White, aged 26, living in Yeovil; Lucy Locke, aged 23, living in Martock, Somerset.
Her maternal grandfather is named as John Rowland, aged 73, living with maternal aunt, Sarah Penny.
Alma was emigrated to Canada on 21st February 1907 aboard the SS Dominion and arrived in Portland on 5th March.
I can confirm that Reginald and Frank were NOT admitted to Barnardo's care.

I have failed, as yet, to locate a marriage date for Frank Penny to his wife Rose May. Or to discover her maiden name.

Frank's letter of 9/11/1955 to his sister Lucy Locke nee Penny, my grandmother, makes no mention of  being in Canada. In view of his poor heath after the war it seems unlikely.
Other related Penny family members did emigrate to Canada although I have no record of a Frank Penny.
