Orkney / Re: CALDER, Stromness, Walls & Flotta

Thanks, I found the parents and two of the children's baptisms.  Unfortunately, there was nothing there that I didn't already have (which I posted above).

I am searching for information on the parents family lines, and any information on Alexander, Jean and Isabella's marriages, etc.

I went through that site, and could not find ANY of those specific people on it.  There are several references to Calder's, some notes posted by Calder's, but nothing I could find that mentioned any of these specific people.

I used their search feature, and looked at every Calder that came up.   Perhaps I am doing something wrong?

Orkney / CALDER, Stromness, Walls & Flotta
« on: Saturday 28 February 09 17:47 GMT (UK)  »
I am researching the Calder family of Stromness, Walls & Flotta, Orkney Islands.  I descend from James Calder, who was born in Stromness on 10 Nov 1775.  He was employed by the Hudson's Bay Company, and remained in Canada, where he married a Native woman and had a large family.

His parents were John Calder and Jean Sandison.  They had the following children that I know of:

Alexander Calder, b. 6 Auf 1772
James Calder
Jean Calder, b. 16 Apr 1778
Marcus Calder, b. abt 1780 (He was also an employee of the Hudson's Bay Co. and remained in Canada, where he also married a native woman)
Isabella Calder, b. 5 Oct 1782

I would very much appreciate any additional information on this family, including:

any other children
dates of birth, marriage and/or death of the parents,
parents/grandparents/siblings ect. of the parents

Any other information on this family line would be appreciated.

I have a fair amount of data on their descendants in Manitoba, Canada, and am willing to share that data.

Inverness / McLennan of Aird Kiltarlity
« on: Saturday 28 February 09 17:28 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for any information on the parents, siblings, children, etc. of John McLennan and his wife Christian.  John was born about 1770-1775, and he emigrated with his wife and children to Pictou, Nova Scotia, Canada in 1802.  The only child that I know of was Catherine (Kate) McLennan, born in Aird Kiltarlity about 1798

I would especially like to correspond with anyone that is researching this family in Canada, as well as anyone that is researching this family line in Scotland.

I am looking for anyon researching this family.  I have a LOT of data on them, particularly on the line descended from Deacon Samuel Wright who emigrated to the American colonies with the Winthrop fleet in 1630.

I would very much like to know if anyone has tracked this family from BEFORE they moved to Kelvedon or the South Weald area?

Perthshire / STEWART, Uchdnanetaig area of Blair Athol
« on: Monday 16 February 09 15:55 GMT (UK)  »
I am searching for anyone that is researching the Stewart's of the Uchdnanetaig area of the Parish of Blair Athol, Perthshire.

My branch of that family began with Robert Stewart, b. 28 March 1790, who emigrated to Cumberland County, Nova Scotia.  He veru nicely had his tombstone inscribed "Son of Alexander and Christy of Blair Athol, Scotland".

(Wouldn't it be nice if all of our ancestors listed their parents, etc. on their tombstones?)

I have  lot of information on the descendants of Robert Stewart, and some information on his ancestry.  I would love to share/swap information with anyone that is researching this family.

Thank you,

Derry (Londonderry) / Hillman/Black Families
« on: Monday 16 February 09 15:47 GMT (UK)  »
I am searching for the birth/baptism or any other information on  Alexander Hillman Black (also known as George Alexander Hillman Black), who was born 12 Aug 1851.

He had emigrated to Manitoba, Canada by 1872/73. No records of any British Subject emigrating to Canada were kept.

His parents are listed as James Black (reportedly born in Scotland) and Mary Hillman.

The ONLY Hillman families listed in Griffith's Valuation were in the area of Magherfelt, and in the Parish of Boveagh.  There were also Black families in those locations.  Both family names also show up in the 1831 Census Index.

Alexander Black was a Presbyterian in Canada, so I would presume that his family were Presbyterian (Church of Scotland) also.  He was also reportedly a member of the Orange Order in Canada (this can not be confirmed, as there sinply are no records of any of the Orange Lodges in his area of Manitoba).

He was supposedly a "remittance man", paid an annual sum not to return to Ireland.  The family stories are that he was involved in a scandal with a Catholic girl (again, no proof at all).

Family stories state that his father was some kind of a government official.

ANY help in identifying his family would be greatly appreciated.

You can contact me at"  (*), if you would prefer.

Thank you,

Lynton (Bill) Stewart
