Hi Cath,

Yes, I did get a bit excited.  You are the first family on my granddad's side that I have made contact with.  Having calmed down, this is how we are related:

Isabella Ritchie Guthrie born 1909 to Barbara Guthrie (nee Ritchie) and William Guthrie who married 6th July 1910.  Barbara Guthrie (nee Ritchie) was born 1st August 1890 at Inverdunning, Dunning to Isabella Baldie Ritchie.  Isabella had two children out of wedlock - Barbara and David Ritchie.  Isabella subsequently married Henry Brand on the 4th January 1900.  Your great grandmother Isabella was my grandfather James' half sister from their father's first marriage.

I havn't found evidence of a second marriage for Isabella prior to 1933 so I am not sure about that nor do I have any information regarding any Brand children from the marriage.

Hope to hear from you again soon.

Ian

Hello Cath,

My grandfather James Andrew Ritchie was born at Roundlaw Ploughman's Cottage, Trinit Gask in 1901.  I have very little information about his brother's and sisters.  His father had two wives, Betsy Allan (first wife) and Janet Ramsay (second wife).  I believe the Barbara you refer to may be the Barbara born to James and Betsy in 1891.  This would mean she is a half sister to my grandfather, and your mother is his niece making us cousins?  I would like to take this further if I could in a more direct fashion.  I am on (*)

Hi Christine,

I have a Great Aunt who married a Laing.  Details are Mary Ann Allan married George Laing, ploughman of Gourdies Hill on 13 December 1865.  George Laing's parents are listed as George Laing, Flesher (dec) and Anne Robertson.

Regards,

Ian

Hi all,

Trying to trace Barbara Boyd born abt. 1826 ish to Peter Boyd and Elizabeth Crombie.  Death certificate in 1905 states she was illegitimate.  She had three children to George Allan, ploughman - children were Betsy Allan, Mary Ann Allan and Jessie Allan.  It appears Barbara spent most if not all her years in Dunning as a washerwoman/charwomen/laundress.  She appears to have been unmarried throughout her life.  Betsy Allan married my great grandfather James Ritchie.  Any information would be appreciated.

Hello Diddy,

Thanks for the info.  Are you able to go back past Alexander Ritchie?  I looked at James Ritchie and Jean Roy who married 14 Dec 1800 at Crieff but it doesn't feel right, or am I discounting the right line?

Hello Wendy,

Yes, they are my Baldy/Bauldie/Baldie line.  Isobel Baldy married Alexander Ritchie (born 1810 in Crieff).  They had a son James born abt. 1851 in Newburgh died 1930 in Auchterader.  It is through this line that I am tied.  One of my stumbling blocks is the absence of a birth entry for James Ritchie and another is a difficulty in getting back further than Alexander Ritchie.

On the Baldie side I have been able to go back as follows:

John Baldie and Janet Black - married prior to 1674:  I have no information on Janet Black.
David Baude b. 12 Aug 1683 St Andrews Fife,
Margaret Baldie b 06 Dec 1674 St Andrews Fife,
John Baldie b 24 Jun 1677 St Andrews Fife,
Elizabeth Baldie b 26 May 1680 St Andrews Fife

David Baude married Elizabeth Aitken on 09 Apr 1699 at Ceres,  I am seeking information on Elizabeth Aitken's origins - she was born abt 1683 in Fife.
Davide Baude b abt. 1699 Fife,
Margaret Baude b 22 Jan 1703 Ceres Fife,
John Baude b 20 Dec 1705 Ceres Fife,
James Baldie b 17 Jun 1708 Ceres Fife,
Ronald Bauldie b 10 Sep 1710 Ceres Fife

David Baude (Jnr) married Margery Alison b abt. 1706 in Fife on 08 Dec 1722 at Ceres.  I have no informtion on Margery Alison:
Robert Baldie b 10 Mar 1731 Ceres Fife,
George Baldie b 12 Jan 1735 Ceres Fife

Robert Baldie married Isobel Foramen b abt 1734 in Craig, Angus??? on 01 Jun 1764 at Ceres.  I have no further information on Isobel Foramen.
John Baldy b 15 Jul 1767 Ceres Fife,
Marjory Baldie b 13 Jun 1765 Ceres Fife,
Margaret Baldie b 04 Nov 1769 Ceres Fife,
Mary Baldie b abt. 1772,
Isobel Baude b 06 Dec 1772 Ceres Fife,
David Baldie b 08 May 1777 Ceres Fife,
Agnes Baldie b abt 1785 Ceres Fife

John Baldy married Catherine Hean (no information on Catherine at all) on 08 Jan 1791 at Ceres Fife.
William Fernie Baldy b 07 Nov 1792 Largo Fife,
Robert Baldy b 04 Feb 1791 Largo Fife,
Catharine Baldy b 07 Nov 1792 Largo Fife

Which brings us back to William Fernie Baldy and Elizabeth Pride.  I have no information on Elizabeth Pride.

Ideally I would like to track the female lines for which I mostly don't have much information on.  Are you connected to the Baldy line?

Ian

Hi Trish,

No, I am in Victoria right now.  Born in Perth W.A. but my work takes me all over Australia.  Yes, I am going back to the drawing board to make sure I have it right - and the researchers who are looking at things in Scotland.  My grandmother came from Glasgow and my grandfather James Ritchie is a product of the second marriage of James Snr to Janet Guthrie Ramsay.  James married Janet after the death of Betsy.  So I would assume we are half cousins, if there is such a thing.  Where do you have your Barbara Boyd in the 1841 Census?

Hi Trish,

Yes it looks that way.  Betsy Allan lists Barbara Boyd as her mother on her marriage and death certificate.  George Allan looked after the girls until they left and worked as domestics.  On Betsy's death certificate she is listed as 'illegitimate' to Barbara Boyd (domestic servant).  Barbara's parents were Peter Boyd and Barbara Kilgour.

Hello Trish,

Yes you are correct, my fat fingers getting in the way of a good story.  Betsy/Elizabeth Allan was born 1846/47 to Barbara Boyd and George Allan.
