Northumberland / Re: St Paul, Whitley Bay -When were majority of memorials cleared?

Well found!

And there is a slightly fuller article in the Shields Daily News of the same date.

Neither article mentions the removal or re-siting of stones, though.

One of the church wardens maintains that no headstones have been removed but that some were re-sited elsewhere in the churchyard to make way for a Parish Hall. Perhaps this was a second removal of headstones!

Does anyone know when said parish hall was built?

Many thanks

Thank you Malcolm33 for your reply. No, my ancestor was not a Proudlock. I don't actually have any family connection with Rothbury, other than that my ancestor died in Rothbury while on business there, and, as I have just discovered, he was buried there too.

Thanks again

Just wondered if anyone is able and willing to photograph a headstone known to exist in the churchyard at Rothbury. I have only just found out about its existence but I won't be able to visit myself until next year.

Many thanks

Understood and thanks for your further message and interest, aghadowey.

I can only repeat what I have already said - my original request was for general guidance on accessing Irish records, rather than a request for people to do the research for me. It is my first foray into researching Irish ancestors so I appreciate any and all help about what web sites to try. And the replies I might receive could help others in the future.

By not posting details, I can avoid causing people to 'waste their time' on my behalf. And in the case in question, there are good reasons for not exposing it to search engines.

But I am not going to refuse offers of specific help, as I know that some rootschatters enjoy a challenge! Hence why I would be prepared to provide specific details in a PM.

Hi again athacliath62.

Thanks for your further message.

He had 3 sons, all brought up in Scotland. Only the middle one was born in 'Ireland' (in 1846), presumably in Dublin city as that is where his father's business was. I don't know how to search for an Irish baptism for him. The other two sons were born in Scotland. I can only find a Scottish baptism for the first-born son and it was a Catholic baptism. This suggests that the my subject was Catholic, as his Scottish wife's second marriage was in a United Presbyterian Church of Scotland.

My original post was seeking general guidance on how to search Irish birth, marriage and death records for the period between 1800 and the start of civil registration.

The reason I sometimes prefer to post details by PM is that public posts can appear as hits on browser searches long after the post has ceased to be active.

Hi,

Senior Moment, athacliath! It is actually Palace Street! Thanks also for the link - haven't found a match so far, though.

Thanks for the info and link aghadowey. It will take me a bit of time to read through it. Unfortunately I don't know his religion or parish. But I would be happy to provide by PM the few clues that I do have, if anyone is interested in the challenge.

Thanks again

Dublin / Dublin BMD 1803 to 1860
« on: Saturday 16 November 13 10:16 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I am trying for the first time to find out how to research Irish records so apologies if I am asking a really basic question.

The person I am interested in was born about 1803 and Slater's Commercial Directory shows he was a tailor in Princess St, Dublin in the mid-1840s. I have also found a few references for him in Freeman's Journal between 1845 and 1853 showing he was alive in Dublin between these dates, but other information suggests he was dead by April 1857.

I am therefore looking for an Irish birth about 1803, possibly in Dublin, and an Irish death in Dublin before April 1857.

How do I start?

Many thanks

Yes, the link seems to have disappeared from Pat's post.
