Hi John theBargee2,

I think you are on the right track, although only William's birth cert will prove it!.

I have William b about 1852/3 in Harbury, based on the 1861 census of Harbury. The parents are shown as Thomas Hillyard b Piddington about 1833 and Elizabeth b Harbury about 1832. According to IGI a Thomas Hillyard and Elizabeth Shaw married 1 August 1854 - although as you say there can be errors.

Anyway the Thomas Hillyard b about 1833, is a sister of "my" Jane Hillyard b about 1830 also in Piddington.  Then later I have Jane age 20, and Thomas 18 still single with parents Thomas and Hannah in Harbury in the 1851 census.

I believe Hannah's maiden name was also Shaw, but I don't know what connection she might have with her daughter in law Elizabeth Shaw

good luck

John

Thanks for the reply, I've recently done a check of nearly all Piddington Hillyards as the baptism of my gg gfather Thomas Hillyard (b about 1803 Piddington, later moved to Harbury, Warwicks) couldn't be found in the Piddington registers, however, a nephew John Hillyard was living with Thomas's family in Warwickshire in 1861, so as he was a Hillyard, his father would have been a brother of Thomas. As a result I had to make sure I got the right John H and checked out every Hillyard family I could.

I found that John's father was Charles Hillyard, mother Mary, and Sandy kindly found Charles's baptism in 1800, parents Samuel & Rachel, so "my" Thomas must share the same folks!   They also had daughters Sarah Ann in 1802 and Ann in 1806 and at least one other son William baptised in 1815.

I also found 2 other male Hillyards, Andrew and James, born around 1795 -1800 in the 1851 census. I was hoping  one or other may have been off-spring of Samuel & Rachel, but as you found out they had different parents. Still if we were able to go further back I'm sure all these Hillyards would eventually share the same line somewhere!

You mention James Hillyard married Elizabeth Shrewsbury in 1817, then Lucy later (she appears in 1841) , but by 1851 James is a widower again, and I noticed a Jane Shrewsbury is shown as housekeeper, and then in 1861 as James's wife, so it looks like he married 3 times, and twice to a Shrewsbury !

best wishes

John

Hi, I've been in touch with helpful folks on this board before, but as this is a request for a look up I thought it best to be posted here. I found a couple of Hillyards of interest in Piddington in the 1841 / 51 census and wondered "who they belonged to".

One is Andrew Hillyard age 55 in 1851 so b abt 1795/6 Piddington  (wife was Sophia)

The other is James Hillyard age 51 so b abt 1799/1800 Piddington (wife Lucy in '41, widow in '51).

If anyone has infomation on their baptism / parents I'd be very grateful.

best regards
John Webster

Many thanks for these links, I'll give them a go tonight.

If all else fails, I guess it may be a visit to the parish records office in N'hampton!

Hello All
I found a few references to Hillyards and Piddington on this site and wondered if anyone shared “my” Hillyards and could help me go a bit further back.

My g. grandmother was Jane Hillyard, born 1830 in Piddington.  She married Thomas Wright in Harbury, Warwicks in 1852.

Jane’s parents were Thomas Hillyard and Hannah (Shaw), who had 8 children in all, 3 born in Piddington and 5 in Harbury. From the 1851 census Thomas Hillyard, is listed as born in Piddington age 48 so that would be about 1803. I can’t find anything on his birth in IGI, so I wondered if anyone had any more news on the family or access to Piddington parish records around that date for a look up.
Many thanks, John, Bucks
