ShaunJ - you really are amazingly helpful!
Although the mechanic for profession obviously doesn't fit, the name, age and date do.  Presumably he would have been given a few months leave, so coming back to UK 6 months before his marriage would seem reasonable to me.
He married on 15 Jan 1892, so travelling back on 19 Jan fits, he would have been 31 by then and his wife was 34.
Sailing back to Penang on 16 May 1899 is also possible, his son being born in Aberdeen in October 1898.  I know his wife and family didn't return to Penang after the son's birth.
Can I ask where you found this information?
Do you know if he's likely to have signed up for a specific length of time in the police?  I wonder if he returned to Penang to complete his contract, especially since he was back here, fathered a further two children and died all within the next 5 years.

Thanks again for that - I've been sitting here all night reading articles about him.  I'm having difficulty imagining how a farm labourer from rural Aberdeenshire in 1882 becomes an Inspector of Police in Malaysia by 1891, especially in a civil rather than military force.

Thank you so much for these links ShaunJ.  I've only managed to look at one so far as my old pc is struggling to load them.  Seeing 'Policeman Murdered' as the title scared me - even though I knew he died in Scotland in 1904!

Anyone out there able to offer advice on the following.

My great grandparents, Robert and Amelia Fiddes (nee Pickard) married in Aberdeen, Scotland in Jan 1892.
Their daughter was born in Penang Straits Settlements in October 1892, followed by two other children in later years.  By 1898, the family have returned to Aberdeen.

Do passenger lists exist for people travelling to/from Penang and how would I go about finding any information?

Can anyone give me some advice please on how to go about finding out about someone who served in the Military Police in Penang?

My great grandfather Robert Fiddes served in what I think was the Military Police in Penang in the 1890s.  His wife accompanied him to Penang and three of their children were born there.

Hi

This photo has recently come into my possession and I'm wondering if you can help to identify the gentleman concerned.  I think the uniform is RAMC and the rank is possibly Captain.  I think the bar on his uniform is for a Military Cross.  There is a faint name underneath which is ....... Watson, Edinr (see 2nd pic).  I can't make out the first name but it looks like P (or R) uian.  I'm presuming this is not the name of the photographer since it is so faint.  Any help you can offer will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Schooner

Thanks for sending the links and info - I've never considered that there may have been climatic changes due to war activity.  Amazing!

Thanks Lynxdpa - strange that the main transcript has the correct incident date, but the memorial details and the men's details have the date as 1915 and not 1916 as it should be.  Also mem details say 'John Head' not John High.
