Depending on the time period concerned you are more like to find Froyle news in the Farnham Herald or Surrey and Hants News.

Have you visited www.froyle.com

The church at Eversley is St Mary's, it was built between 1724 and 1735 on a site which has been used for 900 years. It still functions and I visited about 5 years ago.

The famous author Charles Kingsley was first Curate and then Rector of Eversley. It was he that baptised your ancestor Mary on 18 Sept 1842[ He also baptised my Gt Grandmother.]

There are photos of the church on the net.

Cheers

There is a Baptism at Eversley

10JUL1808 SAMUEL SPENSER s/o GEORGE & ELIZABETH

There is also a Burial

16AUG1835  ELIZABETH SPENSER   Age 29 ?

In the marriage entry for the marriage of SS to CY it states that Samuel is a Bachelor but gives his father as George.

In the marriage entry for SS to ELIZABETH KIMBER in 1832 the witnesses are  GEORGE & ELIZABETH SPENSER

Hope that helps

The man you are looking for is likely to be

4APR1795  JOHN SMITH s/o RICHARD AND HANNAH  at Yateley

St John's Church Cove was not built until 1844 so prior to that Cove was part of Yately.

There is a Marriage at Yately

4APR1776   RICHARD SMITH to HANNAH GODDARD

Hope that helps

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Re: Albert Ebenezer James DSM, Royal Navy

If you can access Ancestry.com go to UK Royal Navy Seaman's Services Register 1900 to 1928. His whole Naval Record is recorded there from 1905 to 1925 when he was pensioned. He was born 15th April 1885 at Leyton Essex and was a Messenger when he enlisted

It says he earned the DSM which was listed in the London Gazette on 10 May 1917

Hi Lizzie

Thanks for your help. I did have most of that info except the Albert Cox joining the Militia. I have Ancestry but can't seem to find that.

Albert's sister Amy died in 1892

Thanks

Thank you all for your interest

Newburychap your reply was exactly what I was looking for.  I have not found Albert on the 1911 Census although there are a couple of possibilities.

Albert was commemorated on the Ewshot War Memorial nr Farnham. Although born in Swallowfield his mother and sister moved to the Ewshot area. I am compiling bios for the WW1 names on the memorial.
