Thanks a lot Gina

Not my John Garbutt (he married Mary Ann who was alive in 1881) but good to rule this one out. Thanks again for looking.

I'm also keen to get an MI from St Leonard's Loftus and would be very grateful if anybody could assist.

It's for John Garbutt and the NBI gives: 31 Mar 1897  John GARBUTT  73    Loftus, St Leonard, Yorks.

My ancestor John was born c.1822 in Kirkby Fleetham and this looks a likely match.

Thanks

Steven

Family History Beginners Board / Re: who lives in this house?

Looking on the 1911 census, there's a John Davies 31, Margaret Davies 29 and Donald Davies 4, living together on Sanitary St, Manchester in the 1911 census. I can't tell the house number without paying, although you could try entering every house number in the search box until you identify it.

Not sure if this is useful, info you've already got or a red herring but good luck.

Census and Resource Discussion / Re: Ancestry v FindMyPast etc
« on: Saturday 14 February 09 20:46 GMT (UK)  »
I'm new to this website but have done extensive research online, mostly with Ancestry which I have been pretty happy with. I was particularly pleased with how easy it was to cancel the monthly subscription.  I've used FindMyPast but find the search engine slightly poorer and the records not as extensive.

However Ancestry does contain a lot of transcription errors and they have used the wrong method for indexing the BMD image pages. There is no easy way for correcting errors as there is for FindMyPast.

I'd recommend taking a short subscription with Ancestry, then when you have collected a number of gaps and missing people, switch to FindMyPast. You'll be surprised how many of the gaps you can fill because the records have been transcribed differently.

Tyrone / Re: COULTERs of Tyrone

Hi m1nxy

I'm interested in your finding of the family of John Coulter & Jane Barr. My grandfather was Robert Coulter born about 1878, from Co Tyrone we think in Fivemiletown son of John Coulter. He lived in Royton, Lancs after WW1 but I've got no further info about his Irish origins.

I'd identified John Coulter & Jane Barr as possible parents from a christening on IGI and I'd be grateful if you'd got any more info to confirm or refute this.

Thanks

Steven
