Derry (Londonderry) / Re: Irwin DNA - Limavady and Roe Valley
« on: Tuesday 14 April 20 00:31 BST (UK)  »
Thanks Kingskerswell,

The Ballyness Irwin tree that I have a DNA link to, goes back to Robert Irwin and Mary McClelland, who married at Boveva in 1873.  I already had their details, plus Robert's parents, Samuel Irwin (1793-1882) and Maria.

I also have two DNA links to Ballyness/Derryork line of Irwins going back to Isaac Irwin (1767-1847) and his wife Martha.  I know two of their daughters married Stewarts, Rebecca Jane to Josiah Stewart and Elizabeth to George Stewart, and Elizabeth's daughter Mary Stewart married John Oliver Irwin.  Would Mary be your great-grandmother?  I think one of the DNA links and/or the person managing the test may both be people who have posted on this page on previous Irwin queries.

I've two DNA links to the descendants of Edward Irwin (1789-1878) who lived at Brishey, but died  in Drumaduff (I think it was his son Thomas's house).

I've a DNA link to the family of Robert Irwin (1863-1938) and Annie Quinn, who lived at Ballyquin, then possibly Carrick East, then Terrydremont.  I think that link may be from someone who has posted on this page.

I've a DNA link to the family of Joseph Irwin (1764-1843) of Drummond and his wife Isabella.

My known direct ancestors go back to my 3 x great-grandfather, Joseph Irwin (1800-1897) and his wife Margaret, who lived at Carrickhugh.  His son, Joseph Irwin (c1833-died bet 1858-1892) married Eliza Irwin of Drumacarney (1835-aft 1892).  She was the daughter of Samuel Irwin (1789-1873) and his wife Elizabeth.  I suspect that Samuel senior may have been a brother of Joseph senior, but have not yet been able to prove or disprove this.  I also suspect that Joseph Irwin of Drummond (1764-1843) may have been their father, but again the problem is proving it.

Basically, I have loads of information on descendants of the folk mentioned above.  My problem is finding earlier information to establish how the various family lines are connected to each other.

All the best,

I am a descendant of Irwins of Carrickhugh, Ballykelly, and that line is linked to the Irwins of Drumacarney townland.

I and other family members have recently got Ancestry DNA test results, and the shared matches have thrown up at least 7 DNA links to Irwin lines living at Drummond townland, Brishey townland Dungiven, Ballyness townland, Drumaduff, Terrydremont.

I had always suspected there were links way, way back, so nice to hav it confirmed.  The hard (if not impossible part) will be working out the exact connections.

If anyone else researching Irwins in this area has had their DNA done, I'd love to hear from you.  I have uploaded to FTDNA, and tried to do Gedmatch, but need to try again as the upload failed.  This is all a bit new to me, so not quite sure what to do, or what to expect.

I know this is an old post, but would just like to mention that Robert Irwin who married Catherine McKane was my 3xgreat-uncle.  His father was Joseph Irwin (a land steward) c1800-1897 married to Margaret (surname unknown) 1809-1872 and they lived at Carrickhugh.  Joseph and Margaret had at least 6 children, James, Joseph, Eliza Ann, Margaret Jane, Robert and Edward.  Margaret Jane (Peggy) 1837-1904 was my great-great-grandmother and married William John Ferguson.

I'm looking for Martha Ferguson Given  born about 1820 of Limavady Londonderry. Came to Australia 1842 and married John Robertson. He was from Co Tyrone.

Martha Ferguson Given was the daughter of John Given (1788-1852) and Martha Ferguson (born c 1795).  She married John Robertson (of Ballyclog Parish, near Dungannon, County Tyrone) on 16 May 1842 at Christchurch, St Laurence, Sydney.

Thanks for the reply, Jack.

I don't have any of those surnames in my Coleraine Cochrane research so far.  I haven't got too far with that particular line, as my husband's Cochrane great-grandfather was born illegitimate in 1879, and I'm finding it hard to trace his mother's people without a marriage certificate to show who her father was.  When I get a chance, I'll probably do a single surname project on that area, as that often provides new leads.  I did that for his other (McAfee) side, with great results.

I've now been told that William Irvine Twine Ferguson may have got the Irvine middle name from the minister who married his parents in Australia, Rev Joseph Irvine Knipe.  I've had a few ancestors with middle names from Ministers, so it seems a plausible explanation.  I would still like to follow up on the Edward Augustus name though, so can see lost more work ahead, trying to wade through the pea soup of Irwins around Limavady and Dungiven.  I thought my Fergusons were confusing, but I think the Irwins are even more so …

All the best,

Fiona

I have a query which Kingskerswell and/or Belfast Beau might be able to help me with, as both seem to be descendants of Isaac Irwin, or actively involved in tracing that line.

I recently saw the name Edward Augustus IRWIN.  He was the son of Isaac Irwin, and Elizabeth, who I gather was not his wife and, if her 1884 death certificate is correct, seems to have had Irwin as her maiden name, and died a Spinster.

My interest was piqued at the name, as I have been researching an Edward Augustus FERGUSON (1837-1918) only child of William King Ferguson (1762-1839) and Ellen Jane Osborne (1818-1896).  Ellen was much younger than her husband, remarried about a year after William's death, emigrated to Australia and had a large family with her new, much younger, husband, H J Montgomery.  She left her infant son behind in Limavady (presumably with a family member) and he later emigrated to Australia, when he was 14/15.  In 1868, Edward named his first child William Irvine Twine Ferguson (born in Australia).  I am wondering if the Irvine might actually be a reference to an Irwin somewhere in the family tree, given that I've seen Irwin, Irwine, Erwin, Irvine etc all used interchangeably in old records for Irwins in Limavady.  As Ellen Jane Osborne's parents were Joshua Osborne and Nancy Sproule, I'm not sure where the Irvine/Irwin comes from.  Unfortunately, I don't know the names of William King Fergusons parents, or the children of his first marriage, to check if there is an Irwin connection there.

I suspect William King Ferguson had other children by his first wife, but I have not yet been able to prove it.  In 1831, before he was married to Ellen Osborne, the census has him as a head of household at Catherine Street, Limavady.  The household consisted of two families, made up of 4 males, 2 females and 1 female servant.  It's possible he was not related to the others in the house, but I suspect they may have included children of his first marriage, possibly with spouses and children.

I know having the same Christian names might be a complete co-incidence, especially given that Prince Edward Augustus, Duke of Kent (1767-1820) was a son of George III and the father of Queen Victoria.  However, I just had a hunch there might be a connection, and thought I'd see if I could prove/disprove the theory.

Grateful for any help/suggestions.

I'm only seeing this thread now, and jumping on because Joseph Irwin (c1800-1897) was my 3 x great-grandfather.  He died at Carrickhugh on 2 Feb 1897.  I would be happy to hook up with McKeown, or any other Irwin family members and share what I know of the Irwins of Carrickhugh and the Irwins of Drumacarney, who I believe are related.

Joseph's daughter, Margaret Jane (Peggy) Irwin (1837-1904) was my 2 x great-grandmother.  She married William John Ferguson at Ballykelly Presbyterian Church on 19 Apr 1855 and they had a large family (12 that I'm aware of) including my great-grandfather, Matthew William Ferguson (1873-1915).

William John Ferguson was also a Land Steward, as were one or two other members of my Ferguson family.  I used to think that being a Land Steward meant managing one of the big landed estates like Drenagh, but I suspect the role may have been more akin to farm manager.

My granny, Maggie Irwin Ferguson (1906-1984) was born in Limavady but, after her father died (as the result of a work related accident on the Glasgow underground) her mother brought the children home to Limavady.  I presume my great-granny must have struggled financially, as Maggie was then farmed out (through the Reformed Presbyterian Church) to live as a companion to an elderly lady and her brother on a farm near Hilltown, County Down, which is where she eventually met my granda, who she married in 1925.

Joseph Irwin's other known children were James, Joseph, Eliza Ann, Robert and Edward. Joseph junior(birth and death dates not known) married Eliza (surname and date of marriage unknown) and they had at least two children, yet another Joseph and Robert.  The son Joseph (c1858-1894) married his first cousin, Nanetta (Nancy) Ferguson in Glasgow in 1892.  She was the daughter of Peggy Irwin and W J Ferguson (my great-great-aunt).  Joseph and Nancy came back to Limavady but unfortunately, Joseph developed Bright's Disease and died in January 1894, in Drumacarney.  Nancy then moved back to live with her father in William Street Limavady, and died at Lisnakilly in 1924.  Joseph's 1892 marriage certificate describes his father Joseph's occupation as Captain of Police, but I have not yet found any records to substantiate that, or whether he carried out that role in Ireland, Scotland, or somewhere else entirely.

FYI

As I have just stated in a pm to princess41 (Glynis) I was mistaken in my last posting about my lines having a proven DNA link to William Leckey Ferguson. The link is actually to the descendants of Robert Ferguson (c1832-1882) who married Sarah Ann Johnston in 1856 in Londonderry and emigrated to Australia.

I do suspect a link to the William Lecky Ferguson branch, but this has yet to be substantiated, so I do not want to confuse or mislead anybody else researching any of these Ferguson families.

Apologies,

Fiona

Hi Cyclamen,

Could you possibly post transcriptions of the other headstones you mentioned.  I photographed a Ferguson headstone at Christchurch, Drumachose, with the names Elizabeth, Matthew and James, but I can't make out any other details, so would love to know more.

The family for the transcription you posted is John Ferguson, born c1815, lived in Ballykelly, occupation, Mason.  He married Mary Glenn, born c1827 (death cert says she was 80 when she died, not 86).  Their daughter Margaret was born on 20 Nov 1864, and her death was registered by a married sister called Isabella Hunter.  I have not yet traced Isabella's marriage.  Mary and Margaret were living in house number 19, Ballykelly at the time of the 1901 Census.

I have four transcriptions for Ferguson from this graveyard.
The one with John reads as follows:

FERGUSON Julia D15 Nov 1882  - 22 - John D 13 Sept 1888 - 73 - His wife Mary D 8 Feb 1907 - 86. - Their Dau Margaret D 12 April 1907 - 42

Hope this helps.
