The Common Room / Re: Accidental death.

My GGF died falling under a train at Euston station in 1911. The records office advised that all they would retain was the same basic info which appeared on the death certificate and not the full inquest details.

Thanks for that, everyone.  I couldn't get the surname interest table to work when I tried it the other day so I'll give it another go.

Suffolk Completed Lookup Requests / 1861 translation required!

I've located Rebecca Cranfield in Little Thurlow on folio ref RG8/1125. Folio 20b  I believe she's the sister of my GGGM.  I can read her mother's name as Mary but I cannot make out the name of her father.  There were a Thomas and Mary living in the village having children about the time Rebecca was born, but I don't think it reads as that.  It looks most like Charles, but IGI doesn't find any matches.

I also can't read if he's a lawyer or a sawyer or the name of their house! :-[

Can anyone with more experience read it more easily, or does anyone have an 1841/51 reference which might make sense of it?

Also, I seem to recall seeing someone with a surname interest re Haylock on here.  I've found a marriage between Sara Hailock and John Cranfield in Thurlow in 1846 and wonder if he's the generation before Thomas/Charles/Cress or if there were more than one family in the area.  Any links?

Many thanks in anticipation.

Suffolk / Re: SUFFOLK/Bastardy Files

Sorry - I didn't make myself clear.  The lack of actual place of birth is on the real certificate which I located which shows GF's real mother and father unnamed.

That raises another question!  My GF's birth was in early November but he wasn't registered until the end of December.  The birth cert simply gives his place of birth as the registration sub district and no actual address.  Was this normal?

Thanks for that.

I have a vague recollection that when my grandfather needed to provide his birth certificate and couldn't, he had to swear in front of a solicitor or someone similar (Commissioner of Oaths?) as to who he was and as to the details of his birth (that's what makes me certain he was unaware of the real circumstances).

Is this likely or possible or have I lost the plot somewhere? :)

I'm really sorry to but in here, but this subject has suddenly come close to me.

My grandfather Laurence John was always told that his mother died giving birth to him in November 1881 and his  father failed to register his birth in his distress.  He remarried 2 years later.

A distant relative threw up the theory that Laurence was not his "mother's" child but a bastard fathered on the woman who later became his "father's" second wife.  It was, as far as we’re aware, speculation on her part based on an entry on the 1891 census.

I have today received from the GRO a birth certificate for a Laurance John and yes, his mother is shown as the second wife, Clara, with an unnamed father.  I know from the 1881 census that Clara was working as a servant in Suffolk to someone whose christian names were John Laurence (that may be a coincidence so I'll post no surnames in case there's descendants of his).

I'm now confused and a little saddened.  Poor Clara was never able to acknowledge her son as her own, only as a stepson.  The fact that Laurance was "responsible" for his "mother's" death also apparently led to a division in the family.

Legally, what is my surname? The one my grandfather used or the one he was born under?  Is there any way of tracing who was his biological father?  I've checked the records on A2A for paternity suits but found nothing that matches.  The bastardy records mentioned here are totally new to me - what do they consist of and could they help me?

Census Lookup and Resource Requests / Adult baptisms?
« on: Monday 03 January 05 20:21 GMT (UK)  »
I've tracked my GGGM Sarah Cranfield as having been born in Little Thurlow, Suffolk, in approximately 1813 from census records although I can't trace her birth.

I can find a Rebecca Cranfield still in Little Thurlow, born in approx 1811, in the 1871 census.

Again, I can't find a birth record for her.

However, I have found baptism records for a Sarah and Rebecca Cranfield at Little Thurlow in 1829 and 1831 respectively.  If it's the right people, I know their parents' names and that they're presumably sisters.

However, this means they were not baptised as children.  I've checked and the church had been there for about 600 years, so it's not as if there was nowhere to baptise them as babies!  Was it quite common for older children and adults to be baptised?

The only possible marriage certificate I can find for their parents dates to 1827 - was it that the girls could not be baptised because their parents weren't married?  Was there a change in church rules?

The latter question arises because their possible mother was not baptised until 1825 (unless it's another sister) and no father is named on her baptism certificate.

Little Thurlow is a very small village so the likelihood of more than one person having the same name is quite small unless closely related and since there's only one Cranfield in the village in 1871, I doubt they were a large local family!

Also, how do I find out where the original parish records are now held?  If these baptismal records are on the Familysearch IGI, does this mean all that parish's records are on there so if a record's not on there, it doesn't exist?

Sorry to ask so many questions, but I've reached that foggy no-go area!
