Not sure what happened to his children, GRWL, apart from the one who went to Australia. You could try tracking them through this site:

http://www.bmsgh.org/wmbmd/

There are plenty of Darbys here, but not, I think, the praticular line you're looking for:

Staffordshire / Re: Old photo of canal side - Oldbury ?
« on: Tuesday 17 February 09 18:38 GMT (UK)  »
Many thanks, Bobbie Jo. I was at a meeting of the Oldbury Local History Group today and asked Terry Daniels, the Oldbury expert, about it. He said there could have been as many as five or six blocks of buildings called Canalside in 19th c. Oldbury. The most likely area associated with Holloway's coal wharf was off Church Street / Bromford Lane on the old Oldbury Loop Canal, now filled in. The other possibility is, as I suggested, along from the Whimsey Bridge. Various older people in the audience said it depended which generation of Holloways we were talking about - they may have moved about!

Just caught up with this. There are a lot of "Canal Sides" in the area and at least two in Oldbury. The one in the photo taken from the air, next to Toys 'r Us, on the Portway branch of the Titford Canal, is too far outside the town, I grew up very near it in Whiteheath. The two most likely Canal Sides are the one near the Whimsey Bridge, Oldbury, next to the Mecca bingo hall (I think) where the road from Blackheath crosses the canal, and the other is near Bromford Lane, where the road to West Bromwich crosses the now filled-in Oldbury Loop Canal. There was a Canal Side parallel to the present Simpson Street, near the centre of the town, on that Loop Canal. There are photos in some of the books on the area eg. Paul Collins' Black Country Canals.

Shropshire / Wood family of Alveley
« on: Wednesday 24 October 07 12:55 BST (UK)  »
A while ago I asked here for any information on my family, the Wood family of Alveley, Shropshire, and its connected families (e.g. Rogers, Binnian / Bennion, Williams, Brewer, Dovey, Landon, Rowley, Lawley, Dimmock, Beddow / Beddoe, Kirkham). I have now put together a website on Tribal Pages entitled "The Wood family of Alveley". If there are any Alveley Woods or connected out there, I'd be happy to hear from them!

This Wood-Williams thing is a strange one, isn't it, Margaret? James' parents were Thomas and Matilda Williams of Alveley, Matilda being the daughter of David Williams and Hannah Wood bpt. 21 Sept 1764, daughter of my 3 x Alveley great grandparents William Wood and Hannah Rogers (m. 1759 Alveley). I've never understood why the surname suddenly included the grandmother' maiden surname with a hyphen, and then dropped the Williams element to become just Wood in the 1881 and 1891 censuses for Minnie! James Williams' (or Williams-Wood's) wife was Emma Lawley, daughter of Samuel Lawley of Bayton, Worcs and Charlotte Tart of Alveley. Yes, I'd love to know what happened to Minnie and her descendants.

Anyone interested in my family, the Woods of Alveley, and connecting families may like to visit my website, "The Wood family of Alveley" on Tribal Pages.

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / Re: PRIESTLEYS of Battersea Rise SW11
« on: Sunday 10 September 06 18:33 BST (UK)  »
Many thanks, Carol I agree he should be there in 1861 and 1871. There is an Albert Edward Priestley b. Huddersfield 1857 but his father's name isn't Edward and they live in Yorkshire! The problem is that none of the bits fit together - no birth cert., the move from London to Birmingham (why?), born in Mayfair according to the census (not Battersea Rise). I have his marriage cert. if I can lay my hands on it, it doesn't give much away as far as I recall. Did his mother remarry or was she not married when he was born? Did AEP decide to change his surname for some reason? I'm totally nonplussed. It's the only "brick wall" I've never been able to break through...

Best wishes,

Dennis.
