I've been a Reunion for Mac user for quite a few years now, and their most recent edition really leapt forwards - making the installation on my iPad synced in real time with the installation on my iMac.

I recently merged about 8 Reunion GEDCOMs together - switching away from separate trees, into one big mega tree - mostly because my paternal and maternal families lived in the same villages in the same county for hundreds of years - and when researching one, i always find the others. The merge was a bit daunting - and not without some minor hurdles to overcome regarding Sources and Notes, but nothing too tough.

This could be her
Mary Bailey (abode Rickinghall Superior) buried 25 Feb 1892 age 83.  Rickinghall Superior, St Mary.

Rickinghall is the neighbouring parish to Botesdale.

There is only the one Mary Bailey on the 1881CR - can this one be found in 1891 to confirm or eliminate?
Trouble is I cannot find a death on the FreeBMD Index to correspond with this burial.

ps.  FreeBMD does list an Emily BAILEY age 83 in the MarQ 1892 Hartismere Ref: 4a/683.  Right age/right district just wrong christian name - coincidence is she named a daughter Emily?

Thank you for this information. I'll check it out. I hope that you're right, as I'm quite keen to kill her off, after reading the reports of her court appearance, and the reason she went to prison. A bit of a nasty piece of work tbh.

I've been trying to kill off my Greatx4 Grandmother Mary Bailey (née Clarke) for ages. She was born about 1812 in Botesdale, Suffolk, and after bearing 2 illegitimate children in Wattisfield in 1835 and 1837, she then married widower William Bailey of Botesdale in 1838.

After a term in prison for abusing his children from his previous marriage in 1841, she and their new family ended up in and out of the Hartismere Union Workhouse/Ling House of Industry.

Having become a widow in 1869, by 1881 Mary Bailey is noted as back in the Hartismere Union Workhouse aged 68yrs. After this, i've lost her and have yet to take a gamble on a death certificate.

FreeBMD lists a few entries, but nothing that seems to jump out location-wise.

Here's where she's been:
1841: 29yrs, Ipswich County Gaol and House of Correction, Ipswich, Suffolk, England.
1851: 39yrs, Hartismere Union Workhouse, Eye, Suffolk, England.
1861: 46yrs, Botesdale Street, Botesdale, Suffolk, England.
1871: 60yrs, 20 Back Hills, Botesdale, Suffolk, England.
1881: 68yrs, Hartismere Union Workhouse, Eye, Suffolk, England.

Any advice/ideas would be great.

Did you find Ann Bowers in the 1851 census.  Did she marry again.

Hi Sabrina, yes Ann remarried to widower Jackson Layton - i'm okay for info on them including the more recent stuff.


With regards to Matthew and any brothers, there is a Matthew Bowers, baptised with two brothers all on 8th July 1810 at Burwell. Whilst John doesn't have an age next to him (listed last, and presumably the youngest and possibly <1), Matthew is noted as 2yrs and William is noted as 4yrs. Their parents are given as John Bowers and Mary. I believe these to be John Bowers and Mary Durrant who were married in Burwell on 9th Sept 1804, after Banns (22nd July 1804).

I'm still cross-referencing the Burwell registers, against census returns to try to establish the family groups... in order to see if i can find any of my Henry Bowers living with any of these other Bowers - and if so, whether the census reveals what the relationship might be.
