Hi Suds,

In addition to registering the FTM software you also need to activate the 6 months "free" subscription.

If you look under the Help option on the menu bar you'll see that there is a "Activate Ancestry Subscription..." option. Just select that and follow the instructions.

If I remember correctly you'll need to enter your credit card details at the time but won't be charged anything. Just remember to cancel your subscription before the 6 months are up otherwise they'll automatically renew the subscription for you and debit your card at the time.

Technical Help / Re: Photos in order
« on: Thursday 04 August 11 11:43 BST (UK)  »
I have been using Finepix Viewer  which I have always done with no problem.
What I have done now is deleted the folders and uploaded them again  using Windows camera wizard, and guess what - they are in the correct order, then when viewing them using Finepix they are still OK, so it seems to be uploading them with Finepix that has caused the problem.
I am still curious as to why they change, it could cause me massive problems in the future.
Thanks for trying to help.

Hi,
If you think the problem might be caused by FinePix Viewer I'd check the "Automatic Save" option settings before you do the next upload.

My version of FinePix, v.3.1.03, has the ability to rename files during the upload. I've got mine set to include the date and time found in each photo's metadata to ensure they all load in sequence. The option can be accessed via "Settings/Automatic Save Settings" in the main menu bar.

Hi,
Unfortunately just placing new items in the FTM media folder does not automatically make them appear in the media collection shown in the FTM Media workspace.

In order to make new items appear in the collection you have to use the "Add / Add New Media" option found at the top right of the Media workspace. Once the items have been added to the collection you can then link them to individuals/facts.

It's also possible to add media items from a couple of places on the person workspace. For info, there's a useful video tutorial on using Media that can be found under the "Help / Training Tutorials" menu bar.

Note, you can use the above options to add media items located anywhere on your hard disk, they don't have to be located within the default FTM Media folder. (It just makes a backup easier if they're all in one folder)

Hi,
It's an option against each individual fact and is found under the Fact Properties.

From the People/Person workspace right click on the fact that you want to add a description to and then select the fact properties. You should then see a radio button that will allow you to select either "Date/Place", "Date/Place/Description" or "Description only".

Alternatively you can select Edit/Manage Facts from the main toolbar, i.e. "File, Edit, View...", select the fact you're interested in and then click on the "Properties" button. You should then see the radio button option described above.

Regards,
Ian.

Family History Programs, Tree Organisation, Presentation / Re: GEDCOMs and photos
« on: Wednesday 04 May 11 23:59 BST (UK)  »
Hi portybelle,

Although a GEDCOM file can't include images the GEDCOM spec does allow the ability to include pointers to images using 'OBJE' tags. From the description you've given I suspect that the Myheritage export has included some of these tags in the GEDCOM file which have then been imported into FTM. Unfortunately I also suspect that the 'OBJE' tags are pointing to a location not on your hard disc, probably on the Myheritage server. (If you're interested, you could check this by opening the GEDCOM file in a text editor and searching for the 'OBJE' tags)

Assuming that the 'OBJE' tags are in the GEDCOM file and you have copies of the photos on your hard disc you could use an edit FIND/REPLACE to change the tags to point to where the photos are located, e.g. the FTM Media folder. Then it's just a matter of re-importing the GEDCOM as a new tree into FTM.

If you don't fancy that route, it's a matter of re-adding each photo to FTM. If you try to open each of the media items within your existing FTM file, from either the PEOPLE or MEDIA workplaces, FTM should give you the location of where it thinks the photo is (but can't find) and the option to search your local hard drive for the actual location.

World War One / Re: J. H. HOUGHTON Medal Card query

In terms of where he may have fought in France you might find the 'The Long, Long Trail ' site useful. It's URL is http://www.1914-1918.net/.

It should give you some details about the H.L.I. 2nd Battalion and if you trace the Brigade & Division it was assigned to, i.e. 5th Brigade in 2nd Division, the Order of Battle section should list the battles that he may have been involved in.

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / Re: West Street Chapel, Hull
« on: Saturday 29 January 11 17:29 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I believe West Street Chapel was a Primitive Methodist Chapel opened in April 1819.

There's a very short description of it contained within an extract from 'Bulmer's Gazetteer (1892), A History of Kingston on Hull' posted on GENUKI at http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/ERY/Hull/HullHistory/HullHistory9.html. (It's a long article, so best to search the page for West Street Chapel ).

The Hull History Centre has copies of some of the chapel records available on microfilm. You can search their online cataloge at http://lib3.adir.hull.ac.uk/dserve/search.htm to see what's available. (Use West Street (Primitive) as the search key).

I've just tried to access Infotrac via my Cheshire and Hull City library cards but I can't get in with either. Using a password of tuesday also doesn't work.

World War One / Re: 'For Loyal Service' badge/medal

Hi Melm,

If your grandfather was Private 7555 in the 1st East Yorkshire Regiment then the attached extract from his Medal Index Card shows that he was awarded the WWI Silver War Badge. You can see that the badge is different from the WW2 version and as far as I know it would have had a number on the back.
