Hi Jayson,

I have looked briefly at wills - I arranged copies of two Charles Davenports, the first proved in 1771 (Faddiley) and the second being the Charles you mention of 1808. Though they didn't make much sense to me my girlfriend, who read history (and can read old writing!), went through them both and came to the conclusion that it was unlikely that either were relevant.
I'll look for John's, and others, as there are obviously more out there.

I have quickly followed up on the marriage I mentioned between Charles and Elizabeth Painter that, as Chesters said, occurred in Whitegate. Looking on the Cheshire Parish Database, it shows Charles as being from Middlewich - so theres another route to look down.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Matt.

Hi all,

Thanks for the reply and sorry I’ve not been able to respond for a few days.

Cancan, Thanks for looking at the records again. Oddly I definitely have a record of Charles Davenports Baptism on the 2nd March 1740, in Burland to Charles and Elizabeth Davenport. There are also records of siblings James (1742), George (1744), Elizabeth (1746) and Catherine (1748). In my notes they are all from the microfiche MF39/01 – Acton Parish Records. The first three shown as born/living in Burland, the last two in Woodhey

Jo, It’s been about 6 months since I was last at the RO (redundancy and setting up a new business took priority).  Although I’m certain I looked at all the surrounding parishes – I recall looking at a map in the RO and then searching each adjacent parish – I don’t recall which they actually were and I found nothing of relevance to record in them so don’t have them in my notes.

Therefore, following looking in to the LH books you suggested I’ll take a trip and check the parishes you mention to be sure.

Chesters, thanks for confirming the marriage  - it was on the same page  as my Acton notes, In a different pen, so I presume I’ve sourced it from somewhere else. I can’t now recall if I have looked at the Whitegate records for that time period (and when I did look I was looking for Ravenscroft’s), so it is possibly the route to success.

Thanks to all for your help. I’ve got some good leads to go off now.

Hi Jo,

Thanks for the reply.

I have looked on the Cheshire parish Database but Actons records are not on there yet.

Would the original Parish records contain anything that the Microfiche copies at the RO wouldnt - I have definately checked all the Acton and surrounding parishes records for the appropriate time frame. To be honest I really want them to appear on the Cheshire parish database as it means I wont be able to misread or just plain miss an entry which I suspect is what I've done with the old handwriting in the records(twice  :( ).

I've also gone around every feasible graveyard trying to find some reference but without luck so far.

I'll try the books you suggested - easiest and warmest option for sure! I do also have a copy of Lysons Cheshire - much later, but it may just suggestion something.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Matt.

Hi all,

I am trying to establish the father of one Charles Davenport, who was baptised on 02 March, 1740, in Acton Parish and who later married Elizabeth thirlwell (Thurwind) of Malpas, on 21 Sept 1759 in Acton Parish.

His father is shown as giving his consent to the marriage and is recorded as being "Charles Davenport from Woodhey, Father this of Brindley"

I have been to the Chester Records office on two occaisions now, and have searched the Acton records and also those of surrounding Parishes without success.

The following four generations are all very local, and as there is such a strong Davenport link with Calveley just up the road, I suspect he must have been born and raised in the area, but I cannot find any record of him.

To possibly help (or muddy the water) I have found reference to a wedding between a Charles Davenport and Elizabeth Painter (I think it was in the Acton records) on 28 February 1727. I dont know if its the Charles I'm looking for or not.

If anyone has access to the records I'd be very grateful if you could have a look and see if you can spot what I cant, or point me in the direction of where to look next.

Regards,

Matt.

Cumberland Lookup Requests / Re: Barrow in Furness - 1911 - Thomas William Holmes
« on: Thursday 23 July 09 09:28 BST (UK)  »
Hi Carole & Geoff,

Firstly, many thanks for your help and my apologies for the delay in replying.

To confirm what you have said so far:

Carole, you think there may be an Thomas W Holmes that is relevent. but the fact that there are parents names suggest he was not illegitimate, and so is less likely to have been put up for adoption?

Geoff, you're suggesting that Hannah was married to another man, Tom, and that they had a son, Thomas Wilson Holmes, who was aged 7 in 1911?

Could this mean that there are two Thomas Holmes' - Wilson and W.? The birth of Thomas W. in the December quarter of 1911 would tie in with the RAF papers.

Just speculating, but on checking, it seems the 1911 census was taken on Sunday the second of April. Is it therefore possible that Arthur Ashbourner Holmes and Ethel Jane are the parents, but that Thomas is yet to be born? Obviously, this wouldn't explain why he was given up for adoption by a married couple.

For reference, I have found absolutely no evidence to suggest there is any link between the Davenports and Barrow in Furness. I suspect that it was most likely arranged through the church.

Many thanks for your help and for giving up your time.

Kindest regards,

Matt davenport.

Cumberland Lookup Requests / Barrow in Furness - 1911 - Thomas William Holmes
« on: Wednesday 15 July 09 17:07 BST (UK)  »
Hi there,

I am looking for my grandfather's biological family. He was adopted by the Davenports in Tarporley, Cheshire, sometime in 1911/1912 (I think).

His full name as I have it is Thomas William Holmes Davenport. As there is no mention of any "Holmes" in the previous eight generations of Davenports I can only assume it is linked in some way to his biological parents - whether as a name, or as a reference to their locality.

His RAF papers say he was born on the 17th October, 1911 and I understand that he came from the Barrow in Furness area.

I have looked on the 1911 census but there is no record of him in either place (I think he was born too late). I am also fairly certain that it was not a formalized, official adoption so there is no paper trail to follow.

My father told me nothing of this fact before he died six years ago - I only know because a "lady friend" of his happened to mention it a couple of months ago. I would just like to have some inkling of his (and my) back ground.

If any one fancies shooting in the dark I'd be very grateful for any suggestions or information you may be able to give me.

Regards,

Matt Davenport.

Cheshire / Re: Cheshire Parish Records Marriages only pre 1837
« on: Friday 03 July 09 09:38 BST (UK)  »
Hi Chris,

I a m trying to trace a Charles Davenport who married an Elizabeth. They lived in the Acton Parish of Cheshire. I have found some of his children who's Baptisms show them living in Fadiley, Woodhey, Brindley & Acton. He is not to be confused with his son  Charles, Baptised 2nd March 1740, who also married an Elizabeth (Thirlwell).

His children were born (baptised) in 1740 - Charles, 1742 - James, 1744 - George, 1746 - Elizabeth & 1748 - Catherine.

I have assumed a birth date of approximately 1705 - 1721, and a marriage date of 1730 - 1740 (as none of his children are listed as illigitimate)

I have searched the Acton Parish records for both his Baptism and marriage but cannot find anything. Either I've missed it, he was born in another Parish, and/or they married wherever Elizabeth hailed from.

Many thanks,

Kwiffboy.

Cheshire Lookup Requests / Charles Davenport of Acton / Barr Bridge (Barbridge)
« on: Monday 09 March 09 20:22 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

Could anyone possibly help trace a Charles Davenport of Acton/Barr bridge please.

I suspect he may be the father of my 3x G Grandfather James Davenport (b. 1801 in Haughton Moss) - Charles appears on James' Marriage certificate along with a Thomas Davenport. It took place on 29/12/1818 at St Boniface's Church, Bunbury, Cheshire.

I have also found a marriage for a Charles Davenport to a Martha Raddler (think I have read her surname correctly!). This marriage certificate is dated 2/07/1791, in the Parish Records for Bunbury. I understand from the assistant at the Records office that the marriage was not by Banns (by licence?), and therefore more information may be available. It was suggested that this may because one or both were very young when they married so perhaps a birth date of approximately 1773 (+/- 5 years) for Charles?
Present as witnesses at Charles' marriage were Thomas W Davenport and David Davenport - I presume some link again (might it even be the same Thomas?!?!)

It seems to me that there is a good chance there is some link between the people above, but so far I cannot find any hard evidence for it. I have looked at the Records Office (and hopefully will get back there later in the month) but am struggling to progress this any further, so any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Kwiffboy

JDGen,

No worries - it just seemed too much of a coincidence but then I guess the was an awful lot of people, even back then.

I'm going to slink off back to the Davenports for now  :)
