Hi Geoff,
I too am decended from lettice through Arthur Chamberlaine, my mother being a Brownlow of the Lurgan family.
I have some details of three children from the marriage of Lettice to Christopher: Arthur, William and the third son Christopher. Christopher inheriting his some of his fathers orginal estate in Louth. Clintownsville in Louth I believe where the family come from and based for a significant time according to the following link http://www.jstor.org/pss/27728617.
I have been building my tree at Genes Reunited if you are a member and would like to share trees please do get in touch.

Dear Jim,
Many thanks for your suggestions, I will have a look at the links you have noted particularly the Aberdeen ones. I have come across the Stirnet link before and have had a brief subscription to it but it mostly seems that they list copies of Burkes or Debretts and rarely provideds anything new that is not in public records. Thank you for the tips.
With regards to the British Library. I visited the India records room and came across a large archive of the East India Company and the people employed and would recomend you visit. In addition I suggest you visit the India Records site of the Library at http://indiafamily.bl.uk/UI/Home.aspx that will give you some leads to follow.

Dear Magnus,
I am interested to find out more of your link to William and would be pleased to give you all I have found to date on him and your family that I have managed to put together. I notice that you do not have the first "a" in MacNamara as I have in the records I have found, is this just an error form you or has the family name spelling since changed?
I have since discovered the William came back to England on his retirement from India in 1871 and died in London in 1881 while staying with his sister.
I have put all I have on the Genes Reunited website and if you are member I would be happy to share my tree. I also have a book that I found on line that mentions William and the life in India that he lived that may also be of interest.
I look foreward to hearing from you and sharing the information,
Best wishes,
James

Aberdeenshire / William Hamilton Urquhart of Meldrum
« on: Saturday 11 April 09 05:13 BST (UK)  »
Dear all,
I wonder if anyone can help me? I'm trying to confirm the parents of my 3 x Great grandfather William Hamilton Urquhart born, we believe, on the 6th of August 1800 in Scotland and died on the 15th of February 1881 probably India. He worked in some capacity for the Hon. East India Company and held a responsible position based in Muzzarfarpur district, Calcutta, in Opium Excise. He was also at other times an Indigo Planter. He married an Alice Smith on the 5th of February 1828 in Calcutta, India. He was based in Bihar for most of his career and he and his family appear in the births deaths and marriages of the India records based in the British Library. From a family tree that I have he is recorded as "of Meldrum" but unfortunately I cannot pin down his position within that well documented family. I have found one possible link that records a William born to William Urquhart who became clan chief in 1741 by his second marriage to a Anne daughter of William Scott a merchant from Aberdeen who by her had son, William who left a son, William now deceased..... (printed in - A Genealogical and Heraldic History of the Commoners of Great Britain and Ireland Enjoying Territorial Possessions Or High Official Rank: But Uninvested with Heritable Honours
By John Burke, Published by Colburn, 1836) see google books.
So many Williams I've found it difficult to pin him down and with the added India connection even more difficult. If any one can assist me with info or research tips or has a comprehensive tree on the Urquhart family of Meldrum for my Williams time I would be very grateful.
I look forward to your posts, Many thanks , James McV

Hi Carole,
Great to hear from an Irish McVittie! I would be delighted to have any info you have on McVittis from your neck of the woods. I recently came across a reference Published in Angol-Celt in Cavan, county Cavan on the 9th Novemebr 1849 " Oct. 31, at Rockfield House, county Monaghan, the lady of John T. M. VITTIE, Esq., of a son." and a marriage ; "In Rostrevor Church, on the 17th instant, Sanford M'VITTIE LLOYD, Esq., M.D., staff surgeon, to Marian, elcest (sic) daughter of the late Dr. CURRIE, of Ballyconnell, county Cavan"
I am looking for McVitties in Clones, Co. Monaghan and in particular an Elliot McVittie who married a Blake!
Anything at all for these folks around the 1750 would be grand!
I look forward to hearing from you,
With very best wishes,
James McVittie

Hi Stoney,

Lucky yes but a lot of polishing involved!
Both Robert Henry McVittie, the  Capt. who later went on to be a Col in the R.O.A.C and his son my grandfather Maj Gen C. H. McVittie CB. CBE. served in the Royal Army Ordnance Corps , my grandfather later becoming Colonel Commandant of the Corp in the late 60's. From my limited knowledge the R.A.O.C. it was formed out of what was the Army Ordnance Corp (AOC) it has now gone on to be what is called the Royal Logistic Corps and includes, the Transport, Pioneer, Catering and Ordnance Corps plus a few others.
To get perhaps a better insight have a look at and around this site;

www.army.mod.uk/rlc/history/363.aspx

To find out what he did and where, it may be worth contacting the Corps museum to see if they have any records for him and what unit he served, they are generally very helpful in the archive department. Tel: 01252 833371 the curators email is sebpuncher@rlcmuseum.com

Good luck with the research on Robert and I hope the above info helps,
Best wishes,
James

Thanks Walter,
I know this site well but only deals with the Scottish McVitties and my lot very definitely have Irish roots. Fermoy, Clones and Dublin are locations that pop up, never Scotland. Certainly if one goes far enough back you may find the cross over but my earliest man only goes back to around 1800 called Elliot and married someone called Blake!
Not much to go on but am always hopeful.
Thanks again for your post,
James McVittie

Dear all,
I was delighted to see this set of posts as I believe the Capt McVittie mentioned is my Great Great Grandfather Col Robert Henry McVittie CB, CBE, CMG of the RAOC. We in the family always understand him to be a fine shot and we still have a number cups and medals that we won for shooting over his career. We did not know of his role in establishing the interest in the event .Thank you for the background info which I will enjoy looking at after this post,
James McVittie

Dear Carol,
Having only just found this site its taking me a while to have a look at all the posts that interest me.
I too am looking for early McVitties in Ireland and have got back to an Elliot McVittie born in 1778 in Clones, County Monaghan. He was a weaver and later became a long serving soldier in the Royal Irish Artillary and North Cork Malitia.  Clones on the boarder of Monaghan and Fermanagh is not too far from Donegal and your area of search, maybe this small bit of info will help in your quest.
I would be pleased to hear more from you and share any little info I have with you,
I look forward to hearing from you,
James McVittie

Dear Brian,
It sounds like you are having the same problem as me in terms of finding early records of McVtys or in my case McVitties in Ireland.
You mention a strong Scottish connection through DNA tests, just in case you haven't found the site as yet go to www.mcvittie.co.uk that is run by an Allan McVittie that might just give you some more clues for your early crowd! As I say you probably have already found it but in case you haven't.
The spelling of the name has varied to much over the centuries there could be some matches for you in the McVittie spelling.
Best of luck,
James McVittie
