Hello Nell and thank-you for your posts.

I do have all the census records for John & Eliza, all show he was born in Arundel, infact I know a great deal about him and his family, but I just cannot find his parents. To add to the confusion, some of John & Eliza's children have the name Summersil alias Burchell on their birth record, and some have the name Fletcher Burchell.

I have found an Ann Burchell b. 1785, in the 1851 census, living in Arundel and housekeeper to a John Fletcher. John Fletcher is a shoe-maker, as is my John Burchell, there has to be a connection here although I cannot verify anything as yet.
I have also found a Henry Burchell, also a shoe-maker, and living in the same street as John, Bond St. Henry was born 1806 in Arundel, and could possibly be Johns brother.

I have found an Ann Summerfield b abt 1779, in the 1851 census, she is described as a "pauper shoe-binder" and also living in Bond St, she was born in Chiddingfold, Surrey.

I am searching through Ancestry.com, but keep hitting a dead-end with all the mentioned names.

Best wishes,
Carol Ann

Hello to everyone.

I am trying to trace the parents of John Burchell b 1813 Arundel, Sussex.

John married Eliza Pledge on the 21st September 1833, at St Mary's Church, Portsea, Hampshire.

I live in Western Australia and wondered if anyone would be able to look-up the marriage in the church records, I am hoping there may be record of Johns father.

Fingers-crossed someone will be able to help.
Best wishes,
Carol Ann

Hello Andrea and thank-you for your message,

Yes, I have looked on Familysearch, did not find a baptism record for John but I will do as you suggest and search other areas.

I live in Western Australia, so unable to check  the church register myself, but maybe, if I put a post up for Hampshire, someone could possibly help.

Many thanks for your suggestions Andrea.
With best wishes,
Carol Ann

Once again I turn to your great team for help with my Burchell family.
I last contacted you in Nov 09 and have since found some more info, but I should have got-back to you long before now.

To re-cap, I am looking for the parents of John Burchell b. 1813 Arundel. John is a master shoe-maker with a large family living in Bond St.

The family are very confusing, as we have the names Summersil and Fletcher appearing as Alia's on some of the children's records.

I now know that John Burchill married Eliza Pledge on the 21st Sept, 1833, St Marys Church, Portsea, Hampshire. I am unable to find the details of their marriage to order their certificate, which I hope will give us John's fathers name.
I have also found a Henry Burchell living in Bond St, also a shoe-maker.....could this be John's brother?  Henry is born abt 1805, Arundel, married to Mary b. 1802 Wittersham, Kent. Henry and Mary have a son William b. 1826, Angmering, also a shoe-maker.

Your help with my Burchell family is very much appreciated.

With best wishes and many thanks,
Carol Ann

Thank-you so much for all your help with this, although we do not have a final answer as yet, I am extremley happy with what we have found so far.

I am thinking the second Ann is most likely to be Johns mother, especially now I have discovered the Fletcher name being repeated with Johns grandson Jack Fletcher Burchell. Jacks father James is also a shoe-maker.

If it had not been for your help in finding the Fletcher name included in the Baptism records of Johns children, I would never have found the connection with Ann Burchell, the housekeeper to John Fletcher.

I will now do as you suggest,  buy a birth document for one of the children, and fingers-crossed it will give new leads. I will post as soon as I know more.
Once again my many thanks to you, you are all gems!!

With best wishes from WA,
Carol Ann

South Africa / Harry Osbourne
« on: Wednesday 15 July 09 09:49 BST (UK)  »
Hello to all.......

I am looking for any information on a Harry Osbourne, whom I think would have been born in the 1920's , maybe London, UK. I believe he worked as a Bank-Manager when he left for South Africa.

His father was Cyril Osbourne, a director of Pontings Store, London.
His mother was Josephine O'Connor, born 1899, and lived at The Green, Cashel, Ireland.
Harry had a sister Peggy.

I am trying to trace his mothers' line, as Josephine was the sister of my G-Grandfather.

With many thanks and best wishes from Australia,
Carol Ann
