The Common Room / Re: Genealogy for Children
« on: Wednesday 04 February 09 13:12 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
My Sons class have just done family trees as a homework project (that's how I stumbled across Rootschat).

They are scottish P6s so are about 10. They are doing the victorians as their project this term and this was just a one week homework so we concentrated on going back ignoring branches.

I feel that since they were supposed to be doing the research themselves and were encouraged to use family members as the primary source then if there had been skeletons in the closet it would be easy enough to keep them hidden.

Most such projects in schools are used to connect the kids to history or to illuminate family structures and as with all such things need to be handled sensitively. One always hopes the teacher manages it.

Thanks Gallium,

That could well be him. My Thomas married an Ellen and named one of his kids Ellen another Thomas and one William (thats my Granda) It seems that young Ellen was known as Nellie and that would make sense if she shared her name with an aunt as well as her mum.

I have a vague sense that it hasn't always been a legal requirement to register births. Can't call a date to mind though.

If I'm going to make a real try at this I will have to shake the family grapevines and see who knows what and what happened to the trees that were being worked on by my Parents and gparents generations. As I know one of my dads cousins did quite a bit of work, and on my Mums side she remembers a tree being done when she was a teenager. That one followed the name (Catt)back from her parents generation and forward from it first occuring in records (Norman conquest) though she believes there was stilla century or three missing when the guy doing it died.

The Lighter Side / Re: BBC TV "WDYTYA?" Series 6 Episode #1: Rory Bremner
« on: Tuesday 03 February 09 10:29 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
as someone who has thought vaguely about doing a tree but never really started (I found you guys when my one of my kids was asked to make a stab at a tree for class) I found the Rory Bremner episode really interesting.

I knew that someone on my mothers side had done a tree when she was young but have no idea what happened to it and the information/documents that went with it.  My dad's cousin has worked on their tree but I didn't know that until DS asked for help with his project and dad said 'Oh I haven't seen the tree since I gave R our ammendments'.  I think he meant me and my sisters broods as it seems they're expanding the tree forwards now.

Anyway back to Rory, I can see  that it was probably a bit thin for a genealigist but for us ordinary punters out there it was good.
Also it should (hopefully) mean less stupid questions of the archivers as it showed just how much might be squirreled away in the family coffers.

Hi
The furthest back I've gone is to Thomas Cornelius Ward and his wife Ellen. Thomas is given as born Glos Cheltenham and Ellen as Kinsham Wors. Marriage time is given as 18 years.

I don't know if dad's cousin Ron had got further before he lost the Wards. It was as much that I was curious about the truth or otherwise of the bishop story, it seems a little odd that the folk would wait for the Bishop rather than do things then and there with the local priest.

Gloucestershire / Forest of Dean Story
« on: Monday 02 February 09 23:19 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
I've been doing some simple stuff as my son's class were asked to try and make a family tree for their homework a week or two back.  My dad was able to give me some stuff as a cousin of his had done a tree. I don't have access to that at the mo but dad told me a story and I wondered if any of you guys could confirm or disprove it.

Supposedly finding the family before they moved into Cheltenham proved impossible because in the Dean births and Marriages weren't necessarily registered until the Bishop came round (once every 10 years or so) when there was a mass ratification of BMDs since the last time.

Is this really true Thomas would have been born in 1866 if he didn't lie about his age in the 1911 census.

Thanks in advance

Have you tried searching trade directories to see when that particular studio was in operation?

Unfortunately I have no idea if trade directories have made their way on to the web yet. I am just dabbling at the moment.

The problem with the 1911 census is that by then they were in Aberdeen and the scottish 1911 census wont be released till 2011.

This is the couple who came into the U.K and that I can't seem to find anywhere until the birth of their son in Aberdeen in 1908.

If anyone has any iseas I'd be very grateful.

Not sure if this should be here or in the beginners bit.

The family I'm hunting are of italian descent

We have one born in Aberdeen in 1908 and  Parents marriage is given as 1895 In Italy (possibly Cervaro but I havent deciphered the writing too well)  Mothers maiden name appears to be Di Camillo.

The family story is that they landed at Preston and came via Venezuala where he'd been working on the railroads.

Now where should I be looking next.
I haven't found them on the 1901 census, but at the moment am really just trying to fill out some details as my sons class are doing family trees as part of their victorian project.

Any tips on where to look would be appreciated.
