Armed Forces / Re: Pte John HALL (929) 65th Regiment of Foot
« on: Thursday 20 January 11 19:37 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks again Trevor.

Yes, its doing my head in as well!

The 65th became the 1st Batallion Yorks and Lancs Regiment with the Caldwell reform of 1881. Likewise, the 84th became the 2nd Batallion Yorks and Lancs. So John Charles Hall is of interest.

My point with FindMyPast is that they had the chance to re-index the documents at the time of photocopying. The front page gives so much information (name/regiment/service number/enlistment date and place, etc) which could have been recorded during the physical photocopy session. As this "exercise" was/is carried out by non genealogists, or even incompetent administrators, the advantage to us the end user is negligible.

Anyway, I really appreciate your attempts to help here. I guess its wait for  the next batch as you say - but I don't think I'll be holding my breath :(

Hello Trevor,

Thank you so much for your speedy and informative reply.

The information regarding FindMyPast confirmed my worst fears. It is also somewhat puzzling as I physically "found" Grandfather John HALL's (2449) Attestation papers in WO97 some years ago, and before FindMyPast thought they were the best thing since sliced bread. That you were unable to find JH (929) I understand, but that JH(2449) is no longer there - strange. I have a photocopy of the former. One would have thought that if the file had been "misplaced", its existence would have been confirmed through the dilligent auspices of FindMyPast.

The information provided for JH (929) came from the PRO. I do not know the Reference source but it was a "huge ledger" in the Maps room(?) and gave information of the pension granted upon discharge, intended place of residence, actual entitlement for days served, etc. That entry is for John HALL (929) although I have no photocopy.

FindMyPast has two entries in the "free" lookup with "extra" info that may be an alternative lead. One is a John Hall born Ballinasloe c1843, and the other is a John Charles Hall who appears to have enlisted twice in the 65th. Would it be possible to have a closer look at those two to see if they might be JH(929)?

Regards
Danny

Armed Forces / Pte John HALL (929) 65th Regiment of Foot

From information gleaned many years ago, my GGrandfather John HALL was born Ballinakil, Loughrea, Ireland c1843 and enlisted the 65th at Birr in 1861. He served until c1891 and died Leeds 1906. I believe that the above facts were gleaned from the Chelsea Pension records at the PRO (and the 1901 UK Census). Despite my personal efforts I have been unable to trace his records in WO97, although those of my Grandfather, John HALL (2449), are in existence.
The family have several individuals serving in the 65th since his time (JH929). I have found no trace of the Hall family in Ballinakill but circumstantial evidence indicates that there may have been earlier connections to the Regiment.
Is there sks who may have info on the 65th (muster rolls/troop ship info) who may be able to cast light on my elusive John HALL? I understand that WO97 is now available to search on FindMyPast but I have no access to that source, nor enough info to make it financially viable. I believe that his attestation records would provide me with sufficient information to "breakdown" this particular brickwall.

My paternal Grandfather John HALL (2449) and his father John HALL (929) were both in the 65th (at one time together but different Companies). JH (2449) attestation papers were in WO97 and I found them physically (and photocopied) some years ago at Kew. However, I could not find JH (929). Having said that, I have specific information about his attestation date (1861 Birr) from his Chelsea Pension Record. He was born Ballinakil, Loughrea, Galway in 1843(?) - father John HALL (farmer).
Is there sks who could keep an eye open for him in the Muster books next time they are at Kew? I need to get some more definite details on him and need also to confirm that he was preceded, and accompanied, by other family in the Regiment.

Cork / Re: MURPHY of Ballincollig, Cork. Census lookup

I'm afraid you have your work cut out for you trying to locate Daniel Murphy in Ballincollig. A quick glance through Griffith's shows 3 Daniels in Carrigrohane Townland, 1 in Blackader's Lane, B'collig village, 1 in Coolroe Townland, 1 in Curraheen & 1 in Kilnaglory. All these townlands would have been in B'collig parish at the time.

Thanks for that info. I can now add a couple of relevant snippets which might narrow things down.
Firstly, the Murphy lot I am after has been partly traced to Cambridge, Massachusetts, and Abersychan, Monmouthshire. Another cousin researching the Wales branch has "found out" that some of his ancestors were buried at Killcrea Abbey (near Ovens).
Secondly, I have another child of Daniel Murphy (Johanna 1855 marrying a Jeremiah Ford) and she gave birth twice in Corbally1871 &1874, once in Kilnaglory 1876, and then in Ballyshoneen.

Does that help in anyway?

I presume this was you looking for the same info on Ancestry.com boards? If not there is someone else on the same trail

You're correct -it's me! ::)

The only other info I have is that Daniel MURPHY married Margaret COTTER (around 1840) and that Margaret was not from Ballincollig. As a wedding would have been in the bride's parish, is there any way to whittle these down?

Hi Danny and welcome

In the 1900 US census there is a Michael (born Oct 1859), Hannah (born June1859), Margaret F (born Feb 1884), Daniel L (born Aug 1885) – all born Ireland. Plus two daughters and one son born in America.

Do you have this? If not send me a PM with an email address.

Ken

Thank you Ken. Yes, this is where I got the family members from after finding Michael and Hannah on Ellis Island records.

I have confirmation  that this is "my" Michael Murphy as my GGrand Aunt Mary Ellen HALL married an Edwin MOOR and they "visited" Uncle Michael on their honeymoon in July 1910 (again Ellis Island). Edwin Moor died in Cambridge in 1911 of blood poisoning and is buried at Holy Cross Cemetery, Malden.

This is where it stops though. I cannot find any further info on siblings, or other relations, who preceded Michael to Cambridge.

From NEGHS Vital Records for 1840 - 1910

Michael Murphy b. 3 Apr 1892 in Cambridge, Middlesex, MA. Parents: Michael Murphy and Hannah Cronin.

According to the Cambridge city directories, Michael died 22 Dec 1916. At the time, he was still at 116 1/2 Berkshire as he had been in the 1910 census. Prior to that they had lived a few blocks away at 1 7th street. Hannah, Michael's spouse, is not listed after 1925 but may not have died. Hannah, the daughter aka Anna, remains in the house.

It's likely that Daniel died 6 Apr 1923 - again from the city directory. He was a driver/teamster.

In 1930, Michael F. Murphy, a teamster age 38, is listed in the Boston Sanitarium being treated for tuberculosis. Relation uncertain.

Cork / MURPHY of Ballincollig, Cork. Census lookup
« on: Saturday 06 March 10 15:59 GMT (UK)  »
Could sks please help me with my MURPHY problem? I need a look up on the available census for the family of Daniel MURPHY  born c 1819 Ballincollig, Cork. Daniel married a Margaret COTTER (bc 1820 unknown place) around 1840 (no marriage details).

Their children were Jeremiah 1842, Margaret 1843, Ellen 1848, John 1849, Johanna 1855, Michael 1859, and Catherine (?).

I have found Michael MURPHY 1859, who married Hannah CRONIN (born June 1859) in 1879 Cork (source: Ellis Island).

Jeremiah MURPHY 1842 emigrated to Abersychan, Monmouthshire, Wales and married a Julia LANE.

My paternal GGrandmother Ellen MURPHY born 19 Aug 1848, married John HALL (b 1843 Ballinakill, Loughrea, Galway) on 5th Jun 1870 Ballincollig.

I am trying to establish the movements of the other siblings, the fate of the parents, and hopefully siblings of Daniel MURPHY.

Family hearsay has it that Michael MURPHY and Hannah, were preceded to the United States by other family (Uncles?) and that was the reason for them emigrating to Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Any assistance, guidance, and/or ideas would be gratefully accepted.

Regards
Danny
