Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / occupation "plain work" ???

Have found an occupation listed in the 1851 census (Deal, Kent) as "plain work". Do you know what this means? the lady was 31 years old and the census record was marked that she was deaf and dumb.

Somerset Lookup Requests / Where is Thomas COX in 1841 and 1851?
« on: Sunday 01 March 09 11:39 GMT (UK)  »
My 2xgreat grandfather was Thomas COX, son of John & unknown.

Thomas was born Charlton Musgrove, Somerset in 1835. I cannot find him in 1841 or 1851 census listings but have him in 1861 in Charlton Musgrove with his wife Eliza (nee THICK) whom he married in Ch. Mus. in April1860.

Has anyone else found him for their tree?

I cannot find any transcriptions for Charlton Musgrove on the internet - does anyone know where I might find any please?

Any help/info/useful suggestions appreciated. Thank you.

Eliza was listed as JUKES in 1891 although the online transcription that I've seen has misread this as Jakes! Doesn't help family tree researching does it!!!!!

Anyhow, in 1891 she was a widow and lived with her daughter and son-in-law (my great grandparents) Joseph & Mary Grace COOMBS and their children in Bratton Seymour, Somerset. She was still living with them in 1901 but by then they'd moved to South Wales - they were living in Gilfach Goch, Glamorgan (where my Dad was born - he was the middle of 3 sons of Joseph & Mary's daughter Gertrude).
Eliza DUKES died in Gilfach Goch on 25 Dec 1918.

Eliza THICK/COX/DUKES was my 2 x great grandmother. Her daughter Mary Grace Cox being my great grandmother. Eliza died in South Wales in 1918 but as yet I don't know the death date of her husband, Charles H DUKES. I will dig out my files and see if I have any more info on the whereabouts of Eliza and Charles for 1891 for you.

Looks like it's him in Swanage. Many thanks for that! He's listed there living with 2 other "general dealers" all listed as single men living as "visitors".

But I think he married in 1900 and think I've found his wife in the 1901 census living in Swindon listed as a boarder aged 20 and married but there's no husband listed there so I reckon he was off doing some dodgy "general dealing in/around Swanage.  So now my quest is to figure out when/why he went to IOW?

I bet he was in the prison there - just a hunch. Like to think there's a black sheep or two somewhere in the tree!

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Parkhurst Workhouse

I have just received a death certificate that I have been trying to track down for ages. At least, I hope it's for the right man! It says he, James David LOVELACE (although surname can be written variously as Loveless/Lovelass/Loveleys etc.) died 15 Oct 1908 in Parkhurst Workhouse, Carisbrooke IOW. His occupation is shown as General Dealer (which sounds a bit dodgy a la Arthur Daley!).
Can anyone tell me if it's possible to find out any more about this person from any workhouse records or if he's on the 1901 census on IOW as I can't find him listed anywhere in Dorset (where he was born). My hunch is that he was in the workhouse there after having been released from Parkhurst Prison - I just think he was a shady character but have no real jsutfication for these bad thoughts!
