Dunbartonshire / Paxton / McKane / Goodale
« on: Tuesday 16 November 21 14:26 GMT (UK)  »
I have Elizabeth McFarlane/Paxton  babt 1831 on the 1851 and 1861 census with her mother Helen Paxton in Dumbarton. I have baps for Elizabeth, Margaret and William Paxton which fit the census entries but the mother is given as ELIZABETH Goodale rather than Helen.
I can't find a marriage for Goodale and Paxton. Was she not married but gave the children his name?

To add to my confusion, in the 1871 census Helen is listed as living with her son William but now gives her name as Helen McKane. I have not found a marriage for Paxton/Goodale and McKane either.

Can anyone help please?

World War One / Swatman military medal
« on: Sunday 12 January 20 13:21 GMT (UK)  »
I have found that my grandfather's brother was awarded the military medal in WW1 but have no details of why.
He was Edward/Edwin Swatman and served in 4th Bat.  East Yorkshire regiment no. 200679 and held rank of corporal at time of award. The medal was issued for bravery in France and notification was in the Gazette 13/09/18. The certificate is a little blurred but I believe it states "Registered paper 18/121/603A"  and schedule no. 184281
There is a report in  HULL DAILY MAIL dated 22/08/1918 which also mentions 3 serving brothers and a brother-in-law who was a prisoner in German hands.
I would be grateful for any further information, or indeed love to hear from anyone researching the Swatman family.

Got the Birth Certificate for Thomas Wright born Hull 1852 and yes, his mother's maiden name was Johnson. Everything fits nicely now. Thanks everyone for all your help.

Hi JuJu
Martha & William Swatman were direct ancestors of mine. Was the death certificate a Swatman?

I saw on "BBC WW2 people's war" site someone talking about life on the Lizard. She lived at no.9 and says there were about 52 houses on the right of the road and just Lizard House on the left.

We recently visited Wymondham and went to see the Lizard.  There are a lot of old houses on the right but just waste land to the left dropping down to a railway line so Lizard House can't be there any longer.

Hi Ruskie
Thanks for your reply. Have been looking at these sites but not found anything yet.

Did find the scan of original PR of marriage of his son & grandson though. Good site but can't seem to skip through pages - have to load them in order so its slow.
