Derry (Londonderry) / Re: Sentinel Archives
« on: Wednesday 29 April 09 15:06 BST (UK)  »
I emailed Central Library Belfast 22/09/2009 but so far I have received no reply. I have also been in contact with a friend who works to the Limavady Sentinel but it seems to be  the case that all the archives have been destroyed 15 years ago by fire.

Derry (Londonderry) / Sentinel Archives
« on: Tuesday 21 April 09 14:46 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for a photo printed  January 1931 in The Sentinel Newspaper. I have been to the library and seen the photo on microfilm but it is very poor quality.  The Sentinel office was burnt about 15 years ago destroying all the newspapers.
Does anyone know where local newspapers are held?

Derry (Londonderry) / Free access to Irish Times archives 150 years

Thought this Irish Times site might be of interest to some of you.
The Irish Times newspaper is opening its archives for free access for the next week to celebrate its 150 years. Normally you have to pay to access the archives.

I tried it out and it works very well.  The Archives go back to 1859.

I think I need the information from the marriage cert to confirm the fathers name. That way I can maybe go about looking for a birth cert.

Thank you Wonderinglady and Aghadowey for your help.

Derry (Londonderry) / Ordering B.D.M. certificates from GRONI using LDS info
« on: Thursday 19 March 09 15:31 GMT (UK)  »
I received this email today. Thought I would pass it on for those of you who are experiencing the same problem when ordering birth, death and marriage certificates using family search details-

Thank you for your email enquiry

Although you have the references from the indexes they are not our references. Our references need a book and entry number to get the certificate for £6.

Our telephone staff will not take in applications unless you are able to give at least one parents name. However if you send me your address I will send you forms which you can send back by post for my attention and if you write those reference details on them I will see they are taken in for you but they will be £12 each.

Regards

Yes this is the same problem I had today only they would not take my details at all. I think I will now try to email my details maybe they will understand the written information better.
I have already been to GRONI in Belfast but this system through Family Search will save a lot of time and trouble.
If only the GRONI staff where  trained to know what we are talking about.
Thank you for your response it was helpful to know I was not on my own with this problem.

thank you everyone for your help with my Conway query   ;

Where do you recommend buying birth certs. I have tried GRONI using the details from Family Search but they do not recognize the details given from the site. Maybe the young girl I was talking to does not understand or is there another source I should be using to purchase the birth details ?
