Hello fellow researcher -

A most interesting reply.  Thank you.

I am a direct descendant of Andrew Nixon (jnr).  Note that he was the cousin of Andrew Nixon (snr).  Their fathers were brothers, Andrew (jnr) was son of John and Andrew (snr) was son of Robert.

There are maps of the Castlewarren properties dated 1777 and 1809, unfortunately not online but can be viewed at PRONI in Belfast.  The 1777 map has an Andrew Nixon as tenant of what became Holding 6. This Andrew would have been my 4x great grandfather.  The 1809 map has this holding divided in two, tenants were John and Robert, the sons of the original Andrew, so this John is my 3x great grandfather.  I believe John died around 1835.  By the time of Griffith's Valuation Robert had died.  The  sons of John and Robert are listed as the tenants of their respective holdings in Griffith's.

Kylie, who started this thread, is a direct descendant of Mary Jane Nixon, whose father was John Nixon, whose father was James Nixon (jnr) tenant of 4b.  I believe his James(jnr) was son of James (snr).

As you note the farms in Griffith's map ref. 1 must have been challenging.  There had been subdivision since 1777, the land is poor.  But, by 1920 century most of these particular  Nixons had moved away or emigrated, neighbouring farmers took over the farms.

My grandfather, William Blackburn Nixon (a grandson of Andrew (jnr) became owner of holdings 4 and 6 (during period 1913 to 1940)  which are still in the family to this day.

Kind regards,
Joan Allen.

Hello again Kylie-
Since posting a reply over a year ago I have been in contact with Nixons in Australia,  descendants of a John Nixon, who was a son of William Nixon, this William was a brother of your Mary Jane. I am also a Nixon descendant.  Have you done a DNA test?
Also, I believe that your William Jamison came from the house just next door to the Nixons.
You can see church records for both of these families in the web site for Bready Ancestors. Look for the records for Donagheady Church.
If you are interested I can send you Google images of the Nixon and Jamison homes.
Hope this is helpful.

Kindest regards,
Joan Allen.

Hello Malcolm  -
I think I am related to you, my mother was a Nixon from Castlewarren, Donemana, Co. Tyrone. My GEDmatch is A847752.  I have extensive research on the Castlewarren Nixons which I am happy to share.

Kindest regards,
Joan Allen.

Hello Kylie
I have extensive information on Nixons from Castlewarren, Co.Tyrone .  Do you have any more information on your Nixons?
The family in question had parents (who remained in Ireland), John and Martha.  Their children, with birth years,  were Mary Jane 1846, Catherine 1848, James and William 1850 twins, Sarah Anne 1852, John 1853, Thomas 1855, Robert 1857, George 1859 and Matilda 1861.  Robert died in 1866, aged 9. I know William stayed in Ireland, and took over the family farm.  John  also stayed in Ireland, he lived and worked in Derry.  I think Thomas and George emigrated around 1888.  Matilda may have been known as Martha.
Does this match any of your research?
Kind regards,
Joan Allen.

This is amazing information.  I have been doing some research for a friend in Australia.  She is direct descendant of Thomas Bell Gibbons.  Thomas Bell Gibbons and his wife Hannah (nee Robinson) emigrated to Australia circa 1854.  Hannah was from Hambleden.
Thomas Bell Gibbons is a son of Thomas and Sarah(nee Bell) Gibbons.  It is a little confusing to have have Thomas Bell's parents and grandparents both called Thomas and Sarah Gibbons.
I will have to see if I can find a copy of this book.
In the 1851 census Thomas Bell Gibbons and wife Sarah are staying in Wales at Carnaervonshire.  I wonder what they were doing there?  Perhaps we will never know.
Thank you, Orpheus.

Hello Kaysy -

I have copied your reply with my comments at places marked between ***.

Did you notice the marriage between Thomas Gibbons and Sarah Bell
16th June 1816 St Mary's Aylesbury. Like some families, including mine the maiden name of the wife was also used, so Thomas Bell Gibbons, became the son of Thomas and Sarah (nee Bell).

***Yes, I had seen that marriage.  It is this Thomas (junior) that went to Australia in 1856 (or there abouts).  He had married Hannah Robinson, from Hambleden. I wonder where their marriage record can be found? They started a Gibbons dynasty in Australia.  I am researching on behalf of one of these Australian Gibbons.***

Thomas (Junior) was born c. 1818 (Baptised 14.1.1819), seeing Thomas (senior) and Sarah Gibbons (nee Bell) were married 1816, I was wondering, as there is a space until Thomas (Junior) was born, it is possible there could have been another child.

*** There are big spaces between Thomas Bell, William Edward and Sidney, the three children of Thomas and sarah as listed in the 1841 census.  Perhaps they were not that fertile!!  So Thomas could have been the first. ***

I have been going through the burial's for All Saints Gt Marlow for the Gibbons.
There is a burial for a William Gibbons Son of Thomas 15.7.1821. (Babe)

!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have just found a baptism for William Edward Gibbons son of Thomas and Sarah Gibbons Born 3.1.1826 Bap:16.4.1826. (Coal Merchant)
Look forward to your comments.

*** This William is (I think) the William married to Elizabeth who appears in the 1861 census as a coal merchant.  I wonder where they got married?  In the 1851 census there is a William married to an Elizabeth who is farming 150 acres in Hughenden, but I suspect it may be a different William.  But there is no William living in Marlow in 1851, so I am confused.  Perhaps he was outside the county in 1851, in fact his brother Thomas Bell and wife were in Wales!***

And what of poor Sidney?  I think he may have died young.

I think that if I am to make some sense of all these Gibbons I need to join a family history group.

Kind regards
Joan.

I have been looking at the census records for 1851 onwards for the family of Thomas and Sarah Gibbons, their children listed in 1841 are  Thomas, William and Sidney.
I think that William (born c. 1825)  married Elizabeth.  A listing in 1861 gives William as a coal merchant, so likely that he took over business from father Thomas.  Thomas and Sarah are  listed as living in St. Peter's Street Marlow in 1841.  This would be an ideal location for coal business as it is just beside the Thames and coal would have been brought to Marlow by river barge.   A later census gives William Gibbons as a farmer in Wycombe district.  I wonder if he advanced to being a landowner?  William in not in 1901 census, so may have died, but Elizabeth is there.  Do you know if they had any children?
I can see no record for Sidney in (or after) 1841, I wonder if he died?
Thomas Bell Gibbons (the eldest child of Thomas and Sarah) married Hannah Robinson (born in Hambledon).  Have you seen their marriage record?  I think they were married in Hambleden, between 1841 and 1851.  They are listed in the 1851 census as visiting in Llanbeblig, Caernarvonshire.  They emigrated to Australia around 1856 so would not appear in any later records.
Kind regards
Joan.

Again, many, many thanks for your interest.  I am fascinated with all the information that you have given.  Will have to have another look at the census of 1841 to see if there is any other information that would give any clues.
At present the hard facts are that Thomas Bell G. was born in Dec 1818, to parents Thomas and Sarah.  Thomas senior was a coal merchant.  Thomas Bell G. was baptised in All Saints, Marlow in January 1819.  The parents of Thomas Bell G. are NOT the Thomas and Sarah (nee Crockett) who died in 1824 and 1810 respectively.
Were there any other churches in Marlow at this time?
I am going to start another line of inquiry - for the wife of Thomas Bell G.  She was Hannah Robinson, born in Hambleden around 1817 - 1818.
Kind regards
Joan.

A further thought - old Thomas would have been 73 when Thomas Bell G. was born - a little old for fatherhood perhaps?
I am coming to conclusion that this Thomas and Sarah are not parents of Thomas Bell.
What do you think?

Joan A.
