Immigrants & Emigrants - General / Re: Owens Papineau - Buenos Aires to UK
« on: Monday 08 October 12 09:32 BST (UK)  »
Bless you Clare (have another gold star!). Sounds right to me.
Owens and all maternal relatives and step-siblings took the £10 trip to Australia in 1954 (leaving just Dad and I in UK). I have now made contact with a living descendant in Oz. that has given me more info of Owens children. Those born in the UK were all born in Surrey (Reigate/Sevenoaks) so incoming port of London sounds right.
As to travelling 1st Class, the Oz info describes Owens as a "Gentleman Farmer" so probably had the funds to travel in this class.

Thanks for your help Barryd, but Owens and his wife appear to both be born in Buenos Aires so not a Yorkshire man.

Once again many thanks to both of you for your replies - where would we be without 'Chatters'?

Immigrants & Emigrants - General / Owens Papineau - Buenos Aires to UK

Hi Roots Chatters,
I'm looking for arrival of my grandfather from South America to UK. Date early 1900's before 1909.
He was Owens PAPINEAU b abt 1890; possibly travelling with wife Christina and daughter Rowena.
Rowena b about 1907 in SA. next daughter Noreen b 1909 UK.
Cannot find them in 1911 census!
Can anybody help with access to UK incoming passengers?

Cheers Bobel2

Northumberland Lookup Requests / Re: CLANCY - Newcastle upon Tyne
« on: Saturday 22 September 12 09:30 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

Many thanks for the helpful and prompt replies. Particularly Adamb for the 1901 record and Trish for the many replies.

It certainly looks like James and Margaret could be the ones (I do normally confirm findings by purchasing certificates!).

My difficulty arose because, using the well known FindMyPast,  the family identified by Adamb cannot be found, and I was looking for continuity through the census records. Without the 1901 record the trail falls apart.

Onward and backward thanks to you all

Cheers, Bobel

Monmouthshire / Re: Marriage - Esther Keith & George Lloyd

Hi Pauline,
Have three possible births for William registered in Pontypool, Monmouth, Wales. Searching 1884-1886.

William Watkins Lloyd br Q1 1885 (11A 158)

Willie Lloyd br Q2 1885 (11A 130)

William Lloyd br Q3 1885 (11A 152)

No luck finding a marriage. Perhaps they didn't get round to it.

Cheers, Bobel

Northumberland Lookup Requests / CLANCY - Newcastle upon Tyne COMPLETED

Would love to trace parents of John CLANCY b June 1886 Newcastle.
1891 census shows only one CLANCY in Newcastle, and he is a sailor on board vessel!
1901 census no help either.
John married Jane Bertram FAIRMAN (FAIRMANN) Q2 1909 still in Newcastle and I have his history from there-on.

Presumably of Irish ancestors, but that is a guess at the moment.

Many thanks if someone can help.

Monmouthshire / Re: Cae Kenfy, Abergavenny, home of W. H. Routledge

Apologies for lateness - only just got to this post.
From a person who has lived in Cae Kenfy for over 30 years:-
Kenfy probably an anglicised version of Cefn (pronounced Kevin) meaning "Ridge". The field between Cae Kenfy and the river is called Cae Rhiw (Sloping Field).
The property Cae Kenfy built around 1866, split into two semi's around 1945, is built on the ridge of the field looking down to the river. (see Google maps search for Cae Kenfy Cottage). The cottage mentioned in earlier reply was the old stable complex close to the main house.

Hi Suzie
Just a couple of miles away from me. When the temperature gets above freezing, I will pop along and have a look. A fairly small graveyard according to Google Maps so hopefully not too difficult. Will post result.
