Thank you so much for taking time to help.  I appreciate all you suggest and have found out.
I did not know about the Chertsey work place but it definitely fits with his whereabouts then.

I have John Joseph George Thomas birth cert born 1886 and death notice from Merchant navy saying he died 1940 in Villa Constitucion in Argentina.
I have hit a brick wall because this man would change his name.  Sometimes he was Charles Walters.
I have found a whole family in Australia that we did not know about.
I can not find out how he got to Australia or how he left.
If he really did die in hospital after being put off his ship.
How to find his grave if he did.
He has my family in UK and the other in Australia!
So I thought I would put his name out there on the off chance someone would know of him.  Or even for some tips on how to find a person who obviously didn't want to be found for whatever reason.

Thank you all.
I continue to search. Cannot find his migration from London to NSW.
Have had birth dates confirmed and place.  His parents confirmed.
But still lots to find out.

I am looking for anyone who is related or knows about JOHN JOSEPH THOMAS born 1886 in Poplar London.  I have found a marriage certificate for him in SYDNEY NSW.  He married FLORENCE THELNING.  His parents were JOHN JOSEPH THOMAS and his mothers maiden name MARAGRET KITT OR KITTS.
He uses other names which have been confirmed.
JOHN JOSEPH GEORGE THOMAS
CHARLES THOMAS
CHARLES WALTERS
He was a Merchant seaman and apparently died in 1940 in Argentina having been dropped off his ship DARTFORD sick.  I say apparently as another record shows him alive after that date, although this could be a wrong match. Any advice on name changes appreciated.

Does anyone have any information on one JAMES MEIN who came over to Australia on the COROMANDEL in 1802(I think it arrived in 1803).  THese Pioneers Settled along the Hawkesbury River an area known then as PORTLAND HEAD now called EBENEZER.

His wife was SUSANNAH MEIN (Formerly SKENE)

Any help appreciated.
