Yorkshire (West Riding) / Re: Drake and Craven Families from Thornton
« on: Sunday 08 August 21 15:45 BST (UK)  »
Quite a few years ago I worked for a company in Bradford called Downs Coulter. Mr Ben Downs was a director of the company which was a family owned business. They lived around Cross Hills as I remember, had a mill in Thornton, Bradford which is still there although the company is not trading. They also had a mill in Lancashire. A lovely family, I enjoyed working for them. The company was located in Bradford in what is/was known as Little Germany. Hope you find this of interest.

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / Re: Thomas Hurd
« on: Sunday 08 August 21 15:32 BST (UK)  »
I wonder if you remember me...we corresponded some years ago re Charles Hurd whose father was Thomas. Since that time I have found out a little bit more, nothing absolutely specific. I think Thomas could have been a horse dealer. I don't have my records in front of me at the moment, but I think I found him in business in Aughton with his son. I believe he went bankrupt. I did wonder if he ended up in prison or went abroad.
Let me know what you think. I'm presently trying to get my other trees together. Found interesting information on my father's side, also whalers on my mothers living in Hull, together with a couple of well known artists also from hull.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Re: Bradford Workhouse Infirmary
« on: Saturday 14 January 17 13:21 GMT (UK)  »
I have just discovered that my gt grandfather, Thomas Brown, of 99 Round Street, died in The Park, 283 Rooley Lane, Bradford of 'Natural Causes, namely arterio sclerosis and morbus cordis 14 Feb 1924. An inquest was held.
http://www.workhouses.org.uk/Bradford/ states that 'by 1917 the union had opened an institution at 283 Rooley Lane, Bradford for 'feeble minded' females.
So why was he in there? The Browns were not poor people, they were very comfortably off.
I wonder if anyone can shed any light on this.
Thanks.

Thanks for your information. I have been looking for Frank for some time now, I thought there might have been a POW camp near where he was buried but have never found it. His family had not heard from him for some time and put a message in the local paper asking if anyone returning from the Front had news. Later the same paper had the information that he was alive but a POW. I suppose this could be wrong information.

I have a great uncle, Frank Brown of Durham Light Infantry 1/7 Bn who died a prisoner of war 29 July 1918 and was buried in Glageon cemetery

I wonder if anyone has any idea which POW camp he would have been in? I'd be grateful for any information/suggestions. Thanks.

The Common Room / Re: Relative in India?
« on: Monday 06 December 10 21:33 GMT (UK)  »
Thank you so much for replying to my post. I looked on the site you recommended for any information but could find nothing.

I think the person I'm looking for will be on gt grandmother's side, so I looked for Hurd, Horner, Mountain and Lamb, the first three came from Wakefield, the Lamb family from Ripon but was unsuccessful.

Thanks once again.

The Common Room / Relative in India?
« on: Sunday 05 December 10 23:36 GMT (UK)  »
I wonder if anyone can help me?? For ages I've been trying to trace some body who used to send gifts of jewellery and money to my great grandparents. In the family it was said that a relative married an Indian lady. He sent presents to my gt grandmother, and also sent money to them monthly. This must have been up until 1918 when my gt grandmother died and the presents and money stopped.
My mother used to say they lived in the White House, Mysore. I don't know whether he was a relative or not and I don't know how to find out. It's all very vague and I feel that with so little to go on I've no chance at all of tracing him. Everyone who might have known anything has passed away.
It's a long shot I know, but has anybody any ideas? I'd be grateful for anything at all.
