Warwickshire / GRANT (Ellen) Kate b 28 Dec 1881 Aston
« on: Sunday 04 December 11 10:40 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone recognize Kate as one of theirs?

On the birth certificate her name is Ellen Kate, but all other references to her that I have found so far use just "Kate". (Which is the reason her birth details were lost to me for s long - many thanks for the great work done by the people at the GRO)

Her parents were William (master tailor and various other managerial and sales positions) and Kate (Weston). Siblings were Annie Mary, William, Sydney Henry and Maud Florence. The family lived in and around Birmingham from about 1880 onwards.

At the moment I can find no trace of her after 1901. It is possible that she ended up in Australia, as did Maud Florence and Annie Mary and many of their cousins.

If it is of any use, all the details of the family that I have are available to share.

Does anyone recognize this William as theirs?

He was born in Camden Town in London (Pancras district on the birth certificate), but his family spent the rest of their lives in and around Birmingham. His father William (another one!) was a master tailor but also had various managerial and sales jobs over the years). His mother was Kate (Weston). Siblings were Annie Mary, (Ellen) Kate, Sydney Henry and Maud Florence.

I can't trace William in any of the censuses, apart from a possible entry in a school in Kidderminster in the 1891 census, nor can I settle for certain on a marriage or death (there are just too many Williams!)

It would be great if a descendant has worked their way back to William - it is actually the only chance I have of finding living Grant relatives as all other branches of the family have petered out.

I have details for all the other members of William's family (though am a bit short on details for Sydney Henry between 1901 and his death in 1938, and for Kate - well, I'll do a separate post for her) I also have details back to William's grandfather - you guessed it, another William for whom I can't find parents). Naturally, I can share those details.

Dorset Lookup Requests / Re: The Clifton Hotel, Weymouth - now the Railway Tavern?
« on: Tuesday 13 September 11 20:38 BST (UK)  »
Many thanks Chris and drooney (and your mother) for all your information (and apologies for the delay in responding - I have only recently had the chance to get back to some more research)

Given all the new information I will obviously have to get back to Weymouth and have a look at all the things you have described about the hotel.

Many thanks again

The Common Room / Re: pics - as a French Grave measurement
« on: Saturday 01 May 10 09:59 BST (UK)  »
Many thanks Nainmaddie - we thought at first it might have been Pied or Pied de Roi, but it seems more likely to be "pic"

And many thanks Philippa - your discovery may well be the clue we have been looking for, as the family also has a strong Turkish connection

The Common Room / pics - as a French Grave measurement
« on: Friday 30 April 10 21:33 BST (UK)  »
Greetings

A French graveyard certificate described the dimensions of a grave as "3 and a half "pics" and 1 and a half "pics" " (in French, of course, but the word "pic" is from the certificate)

Does anyone know how long a "pic" is?

Many thanks

Now, this is interesting.

I had thought that my photograph of The Railway Tavern was taken from the same street as the railway station, but now having a good look at the Google street view, it seems that The Railway Tavern is on a section of Queen St such that the pub backs onto properties in Crescent St - the old wine shop and, now it seems, what must have been the "back" part of The Clifton (facing Crescent St) during WW2.

William Pruden's connection with The Clifton spanned the time of WW1 - later he must have moved to become proprietor of "The Golden Lion" pub (also in Weymouth) - his occupation in a shipping record is recorded as proprietor of The Golden Lion.

It seems as if another visit to Weymouth will have to go on the agenda - I wonder if all the pubs mentioned serve good food and ales?

Many thanks ShaunJ

That is the same address as the Clifton - I will now accept the name change as probably factual - and will have to visit Weymouth again sometime to photograph the Queen St side of the hotel.

I obviously missed the "visitweymouth" website when I Googled each hotel - easy enough to do I suppose.

Many thanks again

Many thanks Cando - that is interesting that it is possible to get transcriptions. As it happened  have already ordered a certificate (and noted the expense!) - I was so excited about getting the certificate details I ordered one immediately.
