Hi Gill,
did you ever find any connection to our respective McClures?

cheers
Jack

Hi Jack. No, I haven’t been able to get any further back with Jane McClure, so no idea of where she was born, who her siblings or parents were.
I’ve been trying to get more info on her for the last 20 years without success.  Hopefully get a DNA match to break down that brick wall some day.

Scotland / Re: Finding previous Wills

His last will and testament (TT at Edinburgh Commissary Court 1805) makes reference to a previous last will and testament lodged on 16 April 1787 at Prerogative Court of Canterbury.
Are you sure it doesn't say something like ".... dated 16 April 1787 and lodged at ...."

Quote
Why would his will be lodged there? Was it customary for mariners to have their wills lodged there?
It would be customary for it to be lodged there after it had been granted confirmation in Scotland if he owned property in England and Wales.

I have tried searching the National Archives around that date (1787), but when I purchased it, it was the later will of 1805.
A 'Last will and testament' cannot be processed by the legal system until after the death of the testator, so if he died in 1803 his will cannot possibly have gone through the courts in 1787. In any case every new will cancels all previous ones.

Yes, the original will was written and dated 16th April 1787.

I have since discovered that the 1787 will was written “down south”, because his naval career was based there, and he had property there also.

The reason I asked if it was possible to view the contents of the 1787 will, was because the 1803 makes reference to people who were named in the previous will.
I was attempting to confirm more information on those people.
I know that the previous will cancels the new one,  and now know it’s not possible to view contents of previous will.
Thanks

Hi Gord
I think we may be connected to the same McKinnon/McCluirre family that you are researching. I would be happy to exchange information with you.  Look forward to hearing from you. Pam

Hi Pam,
Sadly Gord passed away recently.
I have had correspondence with yourself many years ago. I’m sure I already gave you a lot of family tree information.

Hi Dowster,
Apologies for delay in responding.
Which Laurence are you referring to?
There was Laurence Skeen Dow (1819-1880)  who was named after his maternal grandfather, Lawrence Skeen (1763-1838).  There were multiple other Lawrence’s also.

Hi Jen,

John said that John Neilson and Margaret Spence were his grandparents on his dads side, and that they lived between Paisley and Renfrew up until his grandfathers death in 1972.

That's not possible. John and Margaret lived all their married life in Port Glasgow. Margaret Spence died in 1946, and her husband, John Neilson died in 1957. They were my hubbys grandparents.
Their son John died in infancy in 1933. Their only other son, Billy, has one son himself, not called John though.

Hope you are keeping well Jen.

Rosinish,

I'm confused. What is it you don't think?

Thomas Neilson (b.1804) was married twice. First wife was  Christina McNab, second wife was Mary Stewart

Hiya,
Unfortunately there isn’t a connection.

John Neilson didn’t have a middle name. I've got his original birth/marriage/death certs, as well as  all the original insurance policy documents he had over the years, and none give a middle name.

They lived all their married life in Port Glasgow. Margaret Spence died in 1946, and her husband, John Neilson died in 1957, so its not possible that this couple would have been your grandparents, as you mention your grandfather died in 1972.

Thank you very much for that Mabel. It is very much appreciated.
Cam I ask, do you have a link for where you found that information please?

Just by typing "surgeon RN of Pentland Murrurindi " now, has given me 2 great leads that I wouldn't have had without your reply.

Once again, many thanks
