Hi Lesleyblahblahblah,
Your father is around the same age mine.  His name is John Larner and I will ask if he new Norman.  John left Bisley around 1945 and worked in London briefly making musical instruments before going into engineering.

Regards,

Pete

I understand that Shaftsbury Homes had a training ship "Arathusa" in addition to the 2 boys homes at Bisley.  The ship was moored on the river Medway at Upnor where I visited it during the 1960s.  Does anyone know of its fate?

Hello John,
My father (also called John) is writing his memoirs and attended Bisley between April 1940 and December 1946.  He remembers Bill Whylie (with the bow legs!) and bandmaster Pop Hope.  My father played third cornet in the band.
I'm acting as go-between as my father is not yet connected to the internet.  Looking forward to hearing from you,

Pete
