Yorkshire (North Riding) / Re: Watt - Is this a brick wall?

Many thanks Rudbyite.
This is excellent, just don't know how I missed Margaret from Gainford.
I have a great deal of information, much detail, on James Watt and his decendants (I'm one).
I'm quite happy to share it but will require an e-mail address via PM.
For amusement : James' son James was summoned to Barnard Castle petty sessions on March 27th 1844 for demanding (and receiving!) 6d toll from the County Constable at the Eggleston tollgate. He was fined the 6d and costs. He turns up next in Seaton Carew in 1851 aged 71 living with his youngest daughter Margaret.

Yorkshire (North Riding) / Watt - Is this a brick wall?
« on: Monday 18 April 11 12:10 BST (UK)  »
I have traced the Watt branch of my family back to Manfield in Yorkshire (it's just South of the Yorkshire/Durham border - the river Tees). The Manfield parish records show a marriage between James Watt and Margaret Oustan in 1770, both 'of this parish'. There don't appear to be any other Oustan entries and the only other Watt entries are their children. I have no idea how to get any further back with this, does anyone else?
I would appreciate any advice.

Thanks weste,
No luck with Borrowby, it looks lke butcher house there is a farm. I've finally traced it to Kirklington some miles South West of Borrowby on the A1, seems it was on the crossroads of Leeming Lane (A1) and the Masham to Thirsk turnpike. got there in the end! Thanks anyway,
Joe.

Durham / Re: Hartlepool mystery.

The Raw was a strip of land beside the sea between Seaton Carew and what is now Hartlepool marina. It is shown on a Durham County map of 1610 and Robert Wood in his book 'West Hartlepool' (ISBN 0950130699) includes a 1768 map of the Tees and Hartlepool and 'Raw' can just be made out in this location with a few buildings represented.
In the mid 19th century housing was erected in this area very quickly to satisfy the requirements of the sudden population increase which was due to the creation and operation of the new West Dock.
The area then became known as New Stranton (the village of Stranton was a little way inland from here). My gg grandfather built three houses in New Stranton in 1847. It soon became part on the new town of West Hartlepool that grew up around the dock.
Eventually New Stranton became known to the people of West Hartlepool as 'Old Town' and was demolished in 1937 having become too unpleasant and insanitary. Council housing was then built there which in turn was demolished in recent times. There is now new housing associated with the marina on part of what was 'The Raw' - Too much information?

I'm trying to find the location of 'Butcher house toll bar'. I think it was somewhere near Thirsk. My ggg grandfather was tollgate keeper there in 1838. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Many thanks for the help but it looks like I may never find these documents. So frustrating.
Thanks again, I'm so pleased I found this website.

Durham / Help me to find old documents recently seen on ebay
« on: Monday 05 January 09 12:44 GMT (UK)  »
I have just found out that three documents relating to my great great grandfather were recently on ebay.
His name is JAMES WATT builder of WEST HARTLEPOOL, the details that I believe were on ebay are below.
I would very much like to own them or at least view their content:

12th May 1856 vellum indenture West Hartlepool between: James Watt of West Hartlepool (builder) and Joseph Farrow of Cowpen near Billingham (farmer).  Also mentions Ralph Ward Jackson, Robinson Watson, Charles Barrett, Thomas Kaggs and Isaac Robinson.  Has two signatures and seals with received and witness signatures on the reverse.  Also has a plan on the reverse.  Has been folded, otherwise good condition

Offered is this 2 page vellum document dated 10 May 1856. It measures 24 inches long by 31 inches wide. It deals with the grant of a piece of ground situated in Stranton near West Hartleypool in the County of Durham which forms part of The Mill House Farm comprising of 153 acres. It is between Ralph Ward Jackson, Robinson Watson, Charles Barett and James Watt. It retains the revenue stamps and wax seals with signatures

Offered is this one page vellum document dated 23 June 1864. It measures 22.75 inches long by 29.5 inches wide. It is between James Watt, William Kitching and Joseph Farrow. It deals with the conveyance of a freehold dwellinghouse and premises in Church Street, West Hartlepool in the County of Durham. It retains the revenue stamps and three wax seals of those listed. A well written and clean document.
