Devon / Re: Merton Poor House Residence Lists
« on: Tuesday 11 December 12 14:49 GMT (UK)  »
Z and Janeycanuck, thanks for the suggestions.  I will definitely try the page by page search of the 1841 census.

I have a transcript of the Merton Parish Baptisms from DFHS and they mention a George Seldon Halls and his mother Mary.  There is also a further note that Mary had come to the parish and been confined to the poor house as her husband (John Halls) had left her.  Her address in the transcript is also given as "Poor-House", while the addresses on either side are Merton, or cottages/small settlements very close by, e.g.  Potheridge.  The date of the baptism is for George Seldon Halls is Feb of 1836, but there seems to be no George or Mary that match in the 1841 census, which is why I am curious about poor house records specifically for Merton.

Devon / Merton Poor House Residence Lists

Does anyone know where to find residence lists for the Merton Parish poorhouse for the period 1830-1850?  Even where to look in the 1841 Census would be helpful.

Thanks

Bingo.  :)

The ship was the Grampian.  It arrived on Mar 31, 1910, at Halifax.  You can see the associated image by going to http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/passenger/index-e.html, entering the search info above, and then click through to page/image 8.  You can see Alfred, Elsie, and son Robert listed.

Best,

James

Facebook has a Huron County Branch OGS group, one of the members there might be able to help (Exeter, Ontario is in Huron County).

You might also want to consider contacting the RCMP Veterans Association.  There website is http://rcmpvets.net/.  They might be able to help you find Ron.

You could also place a notice in the RCMP Quarterly Magazine, The best address I could find for contacting the Quarterly was http://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/quart-trimest/submit-presenter-eng.htm.

Sandie,

I live in Ottawa and am willing to drop by the Archives for you.  If you want to post or PM his information to me I will request the records.  If there aren't too many I can take digital pictures of them for you and send the images to you.  My great uncle had a box full of papers that included his pay book, medical records, letters to family after his death, etc., perhaps 100 pages all in all.

The records are quite clear, 2 letters were destroyed.  See the attached picture I took when I requested my great-uncle's documents.  The key section is in the lower right.  I did crop a little off the bottom of the letter, but it only contained a listing of other personal effects, Bible, shaving kit, etc.  The sorts of things any soldier might have.

Regarding it being common practice, excellent question, I will check that out.

I realize that Rootschat doesn't do the living relative thing as a rule, but I am hoping that you can give me some pointers for groups to contact.

My great uncle, Philip Ashley Patrick Halls, joined the Canadian Army in WWII, and eventually ended up with the Royal Canadian Regiment (RCR).  He was stationed in Sussex from approximately Sept 30th of 1942 until sometime in April 1943.  According to the RCR website he would have been at Newick-Chailey, Possingworth Park, and the Worthing area depending on the date.  He also spent some time in Inverary, Argyll, and Cumnock-Auckinleck, Ayr, Scotland, for training and prior to his embarkation for Sicily, mostly in 1943 between April and June.  He was killed in action in September of 1944, in Italy.

Now comes the mystery.  I have seen Pip's war records at the Library and Archives of Canada.  Before his personal effects were sent home, two letters from girlfriends in England were removed and destroyed.  In my opinion the only reason this would have been done was if one/both of the girlfriends were pregnant or had a child by my great uncle.  I believe this to be the case because Pip's father, my great-grandfather, was very socially prominent in Toronto in the 1920's to 1940's.  He was wealthy, belonged to all the right clubs, and was involved heavily in the Civitan Club charities (he was a founding member in Toronto).  A child born out of wedlock would have been a terrible scandal in that time and place.  Based on what I know about the RCR and from Pip's records, any child he might have fathered would have been born between July 1943 and January 1944.

If anybody knows of any groups in Sussex/England/Canada that deal with war children please let me know.  I have already registered with Canadian Roots UK, but have been unable to find any others that I thought were reliable.

Many thanks in advance,

James

Hi All,

So many good suggestions.  Thank you all for the tips.  It seems to be that I am missing the forest for the trees.  I have been very close to the problem for some time now, so I just miss the obvious.

To RunKitty, I should have thought of that :-[.  I can certainly order books on interlibrary loan if needed.

To vbain, I see you found my website about the Halls family, From the Halls of Devon.  I hope you enjoyed poking around.  I have had a busy winter semester, so haven't done much with it lately, but I hope to add more updates over the summer.  Regarding the 1851 census showing Margaret Halls.  Did the page you look at have Samuel, Margaret, James, etc.?  That is the only one I could find with the reference you gave me.  Altogether there were 11 Halls on that page between lines 15 and 27, including my ggg and gg grandfather.  If it was some other page please let me know.

To JJ, once again I should have though of that :-[.  If Margaret Godbolt is related to the Peel county Godbolts she could very easily have been buried there.

I do appreciate all the tips, and will let you know what I find.  Please keep them coming.

Thanks,

James aka Nettopsey or Nets
