Devon Lookup Requests / Re: RC Marriage Records for Devonport
« on: Wednesday 11 February 09 17:07 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
Thanks for replying on this.  Someone did a search for me before with no luck.  I am a bit puzzled as know that they were married.  Michael Quirk and Elizabeth Leader - earliest possible date 1829 latest 1837, more likely towards the end of that span.  He was based in MountWise with the 98th regiment of Foot and she lived in Devonport so assumed they would be married somewhere local.   I am hoping that I may find his Fathers name on the marriage register - this would enable me to link him to a probable family in Limerick !  So pivotal piece of information.  Any ideas would be greatly appreicated - Cheers - Jason

Armed Forces / Re: Royal Navy - Nelson's Fleet

Hello - something that helped me trace a number of Naval ancestors - is a book called ' Tracing Your Naval Ancestors' by Bruno Pappalardo.  There are alot of different sources available as the Royal Navy was religious in keeping records, the book helps you Navigate them - the majority are held at the National Archive in Kew.  Nelson was involved in a number of signifcant Fleet Actions so you will probably need to get into the weeds on this one !

Cheers,

Jason

Graham,
Thankyou for the reply.  Yes I have seen this - it is his military records and contained alot of valuable information.  I was amazed that I could find anything on an Irish private who enlisted in 1824 !  I have traced him directly to me, and have some possible lines to tie him into in Limerick but have no next of kin info on him i.e his parents which is why I have been trying to track down the marriage certificate.  I have a possible brother for him who joined the regiment at the same time.

cheers,

Jason

I am looking for a marriage record that was possibly RC that took place in Devonport between 1829 and 1837.  These are held at the Plymouth Diocesian Archive - have been to their website and the email address that they have is not valid.  Has anybody any exerience of this archive or anywhere else where I could search them ?

Thanks,

Jason

Marcus,
There is a site ifhf.brsgenealogy.com where you can search the birth records.  I just ran a search and there are a number of James Shaws of around that date  you can narrow the search to county antrim.  To see the actual detail you need to log on and pay.   It is 5 Euro for each.  They very often have the maiden name !

Good luck !

Regards,

Jason

Limerick / Quirke of Limerick City
« on: Saturday 03 January 09 15:08 GMT (UK)  »
Hello - I am trying to trace an ancestor from Limrick City.  His name was Michael Quirke - he joined the 98th regiment of foot in 1824 and never returned to Ireland.  According to his army record he was born in C1800 in St Mary's - Limerick City, I have no next of kin details for him.  There was a Timothy Quirke who also joined the regiment at the same time also from St Marys so he could be a brother ?  Does anyone know anything of this family and any idea's as to how I could progress ?

Thanks,

Jason

Thanks for this.  It is the family,  they also appear on the 1841 census by which time they are married.  As Michael Quirk was from Limerick it is possible that he was RC amd therefore he could have married in an RC church.  Were there any RC churches in Stoke Damerel ?  Have not been able to find any info regarding marriages at Mount Wise Barracks ?  From you experience is it unusal not to find the christenings of the children i.e does this strengthen the probability of the RC connection ?

Thanks

Jason

Devon Lookup Requests / Marriage Lookup request - QUIRK - Stoke Damerel
« on: Friday 02 January 09 13:08 GMT (UK)  »
Hello, I am looking for a marriage between Michael Quirk (quirke) born Limerick 1799 and Elizabeth Leader (Devonport).  This took place between july 1829 and 1838.  Michael was in the 98th regiment of foot stationed at Mount Wise Barracks and I am assuming the marriage took place locally somewhere in Devonport.  I have no next of kin info for Michael so hoping to find name of any relatives in the marriage record.
Cheers,

Jason
