Kent Completed Lookup Requests / Re: Shoebridge Marriage Please.
« on: Monday 07 January 13 10:50 GMT (UK)  »
Hi again Jen

I understand you wanting a marriage certificate for the marriage of Philly and Peter Shoebridge. However, there were none at that time. Government records did not begin until 1837 so I am afraid you are not going to find one.

All I have is as follows:-

Firstly the marriage as echoed by Linda below

PR Saint Peter and Paul Church Tonbridge
Marriage register Page 139 Entry 416
5 April 1823 married by banns
Peter Shoebridge bachelor of this parish and
Philadelphia Vinall of this parish
Peter Shoebridge signed his name
Philadelphia Vinall made her mark X
Witness names are hard to make out.

The Banns Page 228 Entry 1185
Peter Shoebridge of Prospect Row Tonbridge and
Philadelphia Vinall of Brook Street Tonbridge
Banns called
9 March 1823
16 March 1823
23 March 1823

Secondly, my own bit of research

# There were three Philadelphia Vinalls born between 1800 and 1808 in Sussex #

(1) Philadelphia Mary Vinall baptised 23 September 1803 Buxted Sussex [*here]
Parents Alexander Vinall & Philadelphia (late Allcorn neé Newnham)
She married Peter Shoebridge son of William Shoebridge 5 April 1823 at Tonbridge

(2) Philadelphia Vinall baptised 6 November 1803 Fletching Sussex
Parents Stephen Sandals & Esther Vinall - illegitimate -  'base child'

(3) Philadelphia Vinall baptised 25 Septembr 1808 Cowfold Sussex
Parents George Vinall & Philadelphia (nee Billingsgate)

PLEASE NOTE -
# Another bogus Philadelphia Vinall has been added as 'shared information' to the IGI - Family Search Database #
This entry is incorrect. The entry says:-
Philadelphia Holmes Sandals Vinall baptised 25 September 1808
(the date of the baptism of the daughter of Philadelphia Vinall the daughter of George Vinalls & Philadelphia (nee Billingsgate))
But her parents are written as Stephen Sandals & Esther (nee Vinall).
As can be seen from the parish record above. Stephen Sandals and Esther Vinall were not married when Philadelphia was born. She was listed as a 'base' child - illegitimate - even though her father's name was included in the parish record.

The REAL Philadelphia Holmes Sandals (no Vinall) was born 14 July 1800 Fletching
Her parents were John Sandals & Elizabeth (nee Holmes)
[An entry on Ancestry has been altered to read:-
Philadelphia Holmes Sandals Sandals]

Hi there

It was common practice for one parish to 'remove' the poor from their boundaries and send them back where they came from originally. You can find these 'removal' notices on Genuki.

About the babies - This is an extract taken from a North Devon newspaper in 1842. It should answer your question about their attitude to babies born in the Workhouses:-

"•   The removal of babies and infants from mothers in North Devon Workhouses is suggested so that the women can be put to 'useful and remunerative work'. They are to be given to childless couple in places distant to Devon to avoid being found by their mothers and taken back.

It must have been horrendous. Hope this helps in some odd way.

Hi Tulstig - Mark

If you let me know which branch of the family you are - which cousin you began with - I can let you know what I have. Also, it makes a difference if you are in Austrlalia or Britain. I have a lot on the Australian connection, although I am in Wales myself - convicts in the family! I can find anything I don't have concerning the British connection though.

Let me know what it is you need.

Thanks Chris - I have only joined in an attempt to get in touch with this lady. My contact told me she was searching something I have a lot of information about.

You are obviously in England - I am in Wales but I do have two amongst my family tree that were somewhat forcibly encouraged to move to Australia in the 19th century! Consequently, I have quite a bit of info on some families there.

Having had a look around here, I think I am going to enjoy being here. I am going to look into what I need to be a full member etc

Bye for now
Suzanne

Hi there -
I have a contact in Australia who told me she had seen your post looking for stuff about Philadelphia Vinall.

Firstly, I must apologise to you if you have already seen my post, I thought at first you were looking for Philadelphia Newnman under one of her married guises! Hers is the family I have searched well into the 20th century. However, since she was your Philadelphia's mother, no harm done with the back ancestry.

I don't know quite how to go about you viewing my tree. It is posted on Genes. Do you have a Genes account? If not perhaps I could send you what it is you need with regard her family. I have a few Shoebridges - namely Peter's brother & cousin Frances - in other marriages also.

I have no idea where exactly you are in your research either. If you would like to get in touch, please do so. I have only joined here to get in touch with you, so I am hoping you still need information

Regards
Suzanne

Hi there - I am new to Roots. I have had a message from a contact in Australia telling me that someone on here is looking for information re Philadelphia Vinall. The lady in question is Jenn from Queensland - Marquessate. I have researched Philadelphia Vinall's family - back to the 'nth' degree and forward as far as it is possible to go - further than the 1901 census. If anyone knows her could you let her know I am here. If you see this Jenn - I know I can help you. Happy New Year everyone!
