Australia / Re: Theresa Edith/Ellen GREEN, m.1881 Joshua Davy, Adelaide

Just noting re the 1851 census quoted how the two Eliza Pritchitt's relate to Theresa Green - her mother being Mary Ann Pritchitt, baptism and marriage being :

Baptisms St Martin Birmingham county of Warwick April 1825
1825 April 5th No 1209 born 16th November 1823
Mary Ann Daur of John Martha Pritchitt of Essex Street cabinet maker
0825 April 5th No 1210 born 2d February 1825
Emma Daur. of John Martha Pritchitt of Essex Street cabinet maker

1843 marriage St Mary Lambeth
No 373 10th December 1843
Edward William Green full age bachelor salesman of Princes Street
Father Edward Smithhouse Green ???????????  [I think should say Southhouse, but it looks like Smithhouse, and I can't make out his trade]
Mary Ann Pritchitt full age spinster of Princes Street
Father John Pritchitt brush manufacturer
in the presence of Charles ????pell, Eliza Pritchitt

Interesting to note the second witness is an Eliza. In the 1851 census the two Eliza's are her sister who was baptised St Philip Birmingham 17 April 1827 (Married Henry Swinburne 3rd June 1851) and fairly certain despite a slight age discrepancy, the other Eliza is her brother James Joseph Pritchitt's daughter :

Page 129
Baptisms St Mary Newington Surrey 1844
Sep 8th born July 29th 1844 No 1027
Eliza Louisa D of James & Susan Pritchitt of Kent St brushmaker

I think likely the following is Theresa's mother and sister - on 8Jan1879 the immigrant ship Salisbury arrived in Adelaide, South Australia and amongst the passengers are:

Single Women
Mary Ann Green - domestic servant
Jessie Green - domestic servant

Theresa's other sister Ada Kate Southhouse Green had been in Australia for a year by then and information on Ada and her descendants can be found at http://bruerfamily.com.au/index.htm

Looks like the female line here is Mary Jane Spikin, one of the children from the marriage 11 October 1858 in Brantingham, Yorkshire, England (registered Beverley district) between John George Spikin and Hannah Harland (born Swanland, Yorkshire and baptised North Ferriby 3 Dec 1837). They emigrated to Australia after their marriage, arriving in Melbourne in January 1859 on the boat the 'Annie Wilson'.

Way after the earlier posts, but some updated information.

Firstly just noting I now have a known DNA link across to the Burtenshaw family. Going back through my grandfather Harry Joseph Hillman 1902-1989, to his mother Mabel Kate Wells born 16 March 1882 baptised All Saints Deptford 30 April 1882 died 1963 in Southend area (her husband Harry Hoare Hillman was a musician in the Southend area). She's the daughter of Joseph Richard Wells 1844 -1910 of the Wells firework family and Mary Ann Haughton who confusingly perhaps had several years between birth and baptism - born 10 December 1845 in Fleet Street, baptised 1st May 1853 at St Katherine Cree, Aldgate.

Mabel Kate's sister Louisa Marian Wells b. 1867 but baptised 1873 apparently marries Edward Burtenshaw in 1886 in St Saviour District. Whilst Edward's not my family line and I haven't looked closely, it appears he might be the son of William Henry Burtenshaw born around 1843 in Ashford, Kent and Lucy Covill born around 1841 in Croydon.

One of their sons Edward Albert Burtenshaw b. 1895 or thereabouts marries Pansy Hewitt in 1915 and my DNA match is one of his grandchildren.

A few other notes that may be interesting / useful to someone:

Joseph Richard Wells was the son of Joseph Wells 1818 - 1871 and Susan Matilda Catherine Tucker. Not my research, but I was given marriage date 25 February 1844 at St Mary, Lambeth. Joseph 1818 had previously married Elizabeth Ann Mortram, daughter of Zachariah Mortram (whose father - also Zachariah - ran firework displays at Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens under the name Signor Vicenzo de Mortram), and Elizabeth Ann Pain of the Pain fireworks family.

Joseph Richard was born in Margate but his siblings all in or around Southwark.

Joseph Richard's son Joseph Christopher 1873 - 1923 married into a different Wells family, marrying Rose Pritchitt Wells. Rose's nephew was William Thomas, better known as Bombardier Billy Wells, British & Commonwealth Heavyweight boxing champion and Rank 'Gong Man' (and actor). Rose's eldest sister was Maud Mary Wells, who was the mother of the earlier-mentioned Harry Hoare Hillman. And noting I also have a DNA match across to the Pritchitt family (Rose and Maud's mother being Clara Ann Pritchitt 1835 - 1888 and my DNA link being descended from Clara's sister Eliza Pritchitt 1827-1902)

Mary Ann Haughton was the daughter of Thomas Haughton from Sittingbourne, Kent (born about 1811) and Mary Ann Douglas born 9 December 1806 in Chatham, Kent and baptised 4 January 1807 in Gillingham Kent. Mary Ann Douglas had previously married William Walker (26 August 1831 St Luke, Old Charlton) and married Thomas in 1842 in Lewisham district.

Way after initial conversation but posting to 'fill in' some information

Wells/Tucker marriage 25 Feb 1844 St Mary Lambeth. She's the daughter of Thomas Drewell Tucker and Susannah Hanscomb, not sure but possibly also sister of Edwin Zachariah Mortram Tucker.

Joseph Wells previously married Elizabeth Ann Mortram 1815-1837.

Joseph Richard Wells baptised 18 Aug 1844 St John The Baptist, Margate

re Mary Ann 'unknown name' - Joseph Richard Wells married Mary Ann Haughton 9 Jul 1867 (I have marriage certificate). On nearly all other records her family listed as Horton not Haughton. Dau. of Thomas Horton b c.1811 Sittingbourne, Kent and Mary Ann Douglas who was probably Mary Ann Douglas bap. 4 Jan 1807 Gillingham, Kent. Horton/Douglas marriage 1842. Her second marriage, previously married William Walker 26 Aug 1831 St Luke, Old Charlton. Mary Ann Wells nee Horton's half brother John Walker married Lavinia Strutt, half brother James Walker married Sarah, children Thomas, John and Alice.

Ok, a bit more here Alison

It's been a while since I properly looked at this family ... too busy with project work for the past couple of years. But some extra info that may help

I have William Cooper's parents as John Cooper bap. 1776 Dec 28 at St Mary, Beverley and Ann Norris, who John married on Valentine's Day 1809, also at St Mary

Anna Waters parents James Waters from York and Mary Ridley from Selby married 1803 April 24rh in Selby.

Willian Cooper & Anna Waters daughter Mary Ellen Cooper 1856 married Edward Binnington from Woodmansey on 5th February 1880 at St Mary, Beverley

Their son George Edward Binnington 1880 marries Florence May Telford 1913 in Chester-Le-Street.

Mary & Edwards son Albert Ernest Binnington b. about 1897 married Mary Annie Eltringham in 1918 somewhere in Beverley district.

Guessing you probably have this from 1911 census:

30 Mill Lane, Beverley
George Tate                   40   Middlesborough   Police Constable
Annie Tate                     40   Lockington            5 children living, 1 died
George Wilfred Tate   12   Beverley
Charles Robert Tate     10   Beverley
John Stamford Tate        9    Beverley
Cyril Tate                         7     Beverley
Harold Tate                      2    Beverley

Annie Tate was the daughter of Lockington joiner Charles Stamford and his wife Sarah (nee Clark).

Speculative - A Charles R Tate marries Mary Drewery in 1924 in Beverley district, but I haven't proven whether or not Charles Robert from the above family (anyone know?)

A couple of updates about people previously mentioned

It appears Dennis Tate (middle name Leonard) married Vera Jefferson in 1954.

William H Goulton married Hazel McDonald in 1953

George Tate's sister Elizabeth was my wife's Great Gran - she lived to 97 so my wife knew her quite well.

There is an article about their mother Annora (known as Norah) and about both George Tate's in the Beverley Guardian of July 27th 1935 (my in-laws have a copy of some sort). Also a photo of four generations of the family appeared alongside the article.

Annora's first four children (George 1870, Florence 1877, Mary Ellen 1878, Elizabeth 1880) were with Robert Tate, who we believe then disappeared, which is why she was later unable to marry Anthony Taylor, who she lived with. The four children with Anthony Taylor I believe had Tate as their surname, but Taylor as their middle name (Hilda 1885, Anthony 1887, Thomas 1889, Muriel 1892). The way they responded to the census was interesting (!):

1891   10, Alberlas Terrace, Holy Trinity And St Mary, Kingston Upon Hull

Annora Tate           Sister      50    Beverley   Housekeeper
Hilda Tate              Niece      16    Hull
Thomas Tate          Nephew  13    Hull
Muriel Tate            Niece      9      Hull

Annora was the daughter of William Cooper and Ann(a) Wa(r)ters, she was named after her aunt Annora Cooper.

Elizabeth Tate, my wife's great gran, married Joseph Harland and had just one child, my wife's Gran Beatrice Annie Harland who was born in 1906.

I have only limited details of the other Tate descent lines (and a complete lack of death dates) and would be interested in knowing more. I do know George Wilfred Tate married Elise V Whitaker in 1924 and had a son Dennis, born 1925. Muriel Taylor Tate married John H Walker in 1913. Hilda Taylor Tate married Henry Goulton in 1920, sons William 1922 and John c1925.

Just in case it helps anyone, a couple of extra things.

First, Clara Burtenshaw, Dau of Edward Burtenshaw and his wife Louisa Marion (nee Wells), was staying with her grandparents Joseph and Mary Wells at 1 Garratt Lane, Wandsworth at the date of the 1891 census.

Second, this from an article about the Pain firework family, who were rivals to the Wells' - "During the 1700's various masters of fireworks came to Britain to satisfy the demand for spectacular displays by the Roayl Family, amongst them the Pain and Brock families. William Pain organised displays in the late 1700's in London's parks and gardens. William Pain in the early 19th century passed his skills on to his son James and nephew Joseph Wells".
