If she married in 1864, then she was a minor?
If you are correct about her birth, then she was only 18 when married.

Yes, I imagine she was between 17 and 19.

Durham Lookup Requests / Margaret Ellen Johnson born c.1846, Sunderland
« on: Friday 02 December 16 15:42 GMT (UK)  »
Hello all,

Could anyone please help me with identifying the parents of Margaret Ellen Johnson, born about 1846 at Sunderland, please?

She was my 3x-great-grandmother and married Alexander Watson in 1864.  I appreciate their marriage certificate would hopefully identify her father, but thought I'd post a request in the meantime (and trying to save money due to the time of year ;) )

I have a feeling they were married in the registry office so no church records are jumping out and I also don't seem to have found a baptism record for her either. Unfortunately all her census records simply state 'Sunderland' so I haven't been able to narrow it down to that township or either Bishopwearmouth or Monkwearmouth.

Any help much appreciated.

Regards
Craig

Occupation Interests / Re: HSW?

Ah, good thinking, Suz!  I'm going from the Ancestry 1841 transcriptions. They unfortunately can't get permission to host the original records so I can't take a look.  I'd be inclined to go with your thinking, though, given that the old 'S' and 'L's can easily get mistranscribed.  Thanks a lot!  ;D

Occupation Interests / HSW?
« on: Tuesday 18 October 11 23:25 BST (UK)  »
Hi all.  I was wondering if anyone could tell me what HSW stands for as an occupation on a census return?  This particular one is on a 1841 Scottish census.   I've not come across that abbrevation before and the only thing I've found on the net are occupations such as linen or cotton HSW but no explanation about the abbreviation.

Any help much appreciated.

Hi Walkerlad,

This might be a few years too late but I'm also researching the same family.  Thomas and Jane were in East Murton in 1841, ref HO107/311/8.  He died in 1846 and Jane went on to marry Anthony Gray.  Hope this helps.  Would love to know info from Thomas and Jane's marriage cert; if you have it, please let me know.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: Secretary Hand Transcription Help

Hi pinefamily. Yes, i think secretary and court hand are the same thing.  Thanks Archivos.  I guessed it was about property/land as it mentions peacable possession so thought it was more likely feafed than seased.

Hi all. I'd be very grateful if someone could take a look at the following image and help with transcribing it. This is the first time I've transcribed a document this old and have only been learning about Secretary Hand for the past few days.  So far I have:

To the most reverent Father in god William Archbisshop of Canterbury and Channceller of England

unto your gracious Lordshipp your dayly Oratour Rychard Appulby that hyere is he in peacible possessed and seased/feafed? of ___ ___ and ____ withyn the Countye of Cumberland ___ do means as of fee and soo? seased/feafed? gracious Lord Dynes? evydence _______ the _____ ben? comen to chandes? and possession of Arthur Wirwy? & Gaweyn Warwyk and John Dawton of? ______ hath desired _____ of the said evydences and ajuysments? which to due they and _____ of theym _______ all ryht and good consience [.] And by cause your said Oratour knowing not the ______ numbre of the said evydences ... they be conteyned he is without remedy by the courts of the comen land [.]  Please it here? for your grace ... writt sub pena to be dyrected to the said Arthure Gawyn and John comandynt them by the same? ... at a _____ day and _____ ______ ______ by your ______ to be Lymetted there to be answerd to ch___ ... and shall ________

I also need help with the text in the bottom right as I can't really make much sense of it.  Thank you in advance.

Durham / Re: Help Find A Bigamist

OK, I now have the extra info from the parish register:

8 May 1881 John George Small (bachelor, painter), age 26, of Murton Colliery, son of John Small (moulder), married Ann Usher (widow), age 28, of Murton Colliery, daughter of Charles Williams (fisherman), at the parish church of Dalton-le-Dale
Witnesses: Richard Emery, Ann Woodcock [Ann's brother-in-law and aunt]

The 1881 entry Gracie mentioned is promising given the "printer" occupation (thanks again for that!). Obviously the first names of the chap are different, but perhaps "John George" weren't his actual first names.

That Joseph William may be the son of a John Small who was a baths lessee in Gateshead and later Cullercoats, as opposed to a moulder. [Edit] Ah, it seems the father John Small was an iron moulder in Sunderland in 1851, so perhaps he was a moulder and baths lessee at the same time. Everything seems to point to John George actually being Joseph William...

Not much further forward with finding Ann and her new husband after 1881, even with the new info, but look forward to any new ideas.
