Durham Lookup Requests / Re: OGILVIE south shields
« on: Monday 31 March 14 16:21 BST (UK)  »
Looking through the transcriptions I am doing for the website Durham Records Online I have found the following Ogilvie entries - both children of either Donkin and Jane or Duncan and Jane (with his occupation listed as mariner)

Baptised on 13th December 1848 Ann Donkin (these are both Christian names)  - born 2nd November presumably 1848

Baptised on 15th November 1846 Matthew Willie  born 21st October presumably 1846

I realise that my answer might not be of any help to anyone as I don't know the original enquiry. Anyway I am busy transcribing baptisms of people at St. Hilda's church South Shields and have come across a spelling error.

I am entering a baptism for Jane Phoebe Ogilvy on 13th April 1851 (born 6th February - presumably the same year). The mother's name is given as Jane and the father's name has been put in as DOROTHY!!  I looked at what Family Search has entered for the father's name and they have put in Donrin.  The father was listed as a mariner and I wondered if it is possible that the father was Duncan but because of the Scottish pronunciation it might have been mistaken as Donkin and spelt incorrectly in Family Search as I have found several errors there.  I realise that this is speculation but I hope it is of some help (especially with the name Phoebe mentioned in threads).

There were several children of the marriage - I think my great grandmother Fanny Westcott was the first.  (I never ever found her marriage either - so maybe she didn't ever get married).

Over the years the name Calloway (or Callaway or other derivatives) have been mentioned and my poor old mum before she died at 92 certainly remembered that name.  However whenever I have searched for an Elizabeth Calloway (or other spellings) nothing has come up on Ancestry or findmypast.

The children were supposed to have been born in Dawlish so I guess they would come under the Newton Abbot registration district but usually when you search for births on places such as Findmypast they only show a birth and not the names of the parents.

Many years ago I contacted Newton Abbot registrars but they had no record of a Fanny Westcott.  Should I perhaps be searching for her birth on the Devonshire lookup site to try and narrow it down?

Somerset Lookup Requests / Lookup request for John WESTCOTT 1841 marriage in Milverton
« on: Friday 10 September 10 17:37 BST (UK)  »
I would really appreciate some help with this marriage if anyone can help me.  I have searched for years for the marriage of a John Westcott (father Jasper, mother Elizabeth Spear) who was born in Dawlish in  1816.  He was married to Elizabeth ????? who was born in Milverton around 1823.

The marriage is shown on the FamilySearch I.G.I. records as being in Milverton in 1841 but I cannot seem to find it and have no idea of Elizabeth's maiden name.  So of course I can't trace the tree any further back.

I did find some marriages transcriptions for St Michael's church in Milverton on line but the couple were not shown on these pages.

If anyone can help it would be brilliant!  Thanks.

Before I ask you about a particular surname could you tell me whether Gateshead Fell is the same as The Felling.  Thanks

The Common Room / Re: What does NB mean before place of birth on a census

I've just discovered on Ancestry Scottish transcription of that census that Margaret was born in Shotts, Patrick was born in Hamilton and young Andrew (who is shown as a grandson rather than a son) was also born in Hamilton.

Thanks anyway  - I guess I needn't worry about the NB now. Just don't know where that came from.

Anyone who thinks they may be connected to this family - I would love to hear from you.

Oops, the latter 3 children, Margaret, Patrick and Andrew Branan were born in "NB Lanarkshire".

In the 1881 census the whole family were listed with the surname Brannen.

The Common Room / What does NB mean before place of birth on a census
« on: Monday 15 June 09 23:41 BST (UK)  »
I've been searching for my husband's side of the family.  His grandfather was Michael Brennan, a coalminer who originally was born in Felling, County Durham .  He married a Sarah Ann McKenna in Brooms County Durham and then they lived in the Gateshead area. Michael finally died in Chester le Street, County Durham.

However, prior to his marriage he and his parents and siblings were in Scotland.  I have been searching for the Brennan family in Lanarkshire (and think I have found them called Branon in Holytown, Bothwell).

There were several children in this Irish coalmining family - some born in England, some Ireland and some in Lanarkshire.  However, before the ones born in Scotland it states as place of birth "NB Lanarkshire".

I don't think this can mean "Note well" so does anyone know what this would stand for.

The actual 1891 census was shown as:

Registration Number: 625/2
Registration district: Holytown
Civil Parish: Bothwell
County: Lanarkshire
Address: Rows Carfin 6
Occupation: Miner
ED: 7
Household schedule number: 183
Line: 7
Roll: CSSCT1891_226

In 1881 they were in Dykehead Double Row, Hamilton and the family members then were:

Peter Brannen  6??  (probably 68 if Mary was supposedly 46, though in 1871 she was only 33)! born Queens County, Ireland
Mary Brannen  46 born Ireland
Peter Brannen  23 born Ireland
Catherine Brannen  21  born Ireland
Anastasia Brannen  19 born Ireland
Mary Brannen  18  born Ireland
Owen Brannen  16 born Ireland
Michael Brannen  10 born Felling, County Durham
James Brannen  8 born England
Margaret Brannen  6 born
Patrick Brannen  3
Andrew Brannen  2

LIZZIE WHO WAS 22 IN THE 1891 CENSUS  (born North Shields, Northumberland) WAS MISSING IN THE 1881 ONE.

If anyone on this forum has any information about this family or the meaning of NB I would love to hear from them.

Sorry - forgot to mention that the mother Margaret Hall (Halls) was also from Fishburn.
