Hi

I must admit that I have not not come across Butler or Phillips. Which date are we talking about?

I do know that my great grandfather Herbert Philip Chapple B:1892, was one of 7 children, who were, Mary, Susan Ethel, Margeretta Jane,  John & George (Twins) and Emily. Their parents were George Chapple b 1824, married Susanna Grant.

I cannot seem to get back beyond George, but am off to the Devon records office tomorrow so may have some more information. Perhaps George's brothers and sisters are the connection.

Hi there

Thanks for the help. Managed to find the family in later census records and linked it to my current living grandfather so that's good.

If I wanted to find out Roberts parents how would I do that? Would I need to get their marriage cert to see the parents??? I pretty new to this so apologies for daft questions.

I’m looking for any family history relating to the GRANT family who lived in Denbury area of Devon. Particularly interested in Robert Grant b. Est 1811. Robert was married to Jane and had several children.

Any information welcome.

Hi,
I have been researching my Chapple line in and around South Devon, particularly Totnes/Denbury/Newton Abbot area. I just wondered if you had any information about any Chapples living around that area?

Regards

Many thanks for the advice. I've ordered a certificate so i'll see what comes back - fingers crossed. Based on the info you found it makes some sense, but who can tell.

Sorry to be cheeky, but was wondering you can find anything out about my other line 'Cleave'. I'm stuck with John Cleave 1805. Not sure how I go back from here as most web based things stop here. Any advice for a complete amature?

Many thanks for the quick response.

I'm pretty sure about the birth place of Herbert Philip, Magaretta Jane and Susan Ethel. (all Newton Abbot). As to their parents I know nothing. Herbert does have a Military medal from WW1 as I have it here. Out of curiosity I typed his name in to google and it came up on Devon Heritage website, listing Gazetted date and parents name, however I it lists him born in Torquay in Oct Nov Dec which isn't quite right, so I'm really not sure they were William or Frances. If not I don’t have anything to go on. It’s a strong coincidence. He got the MM in 1915 France, but this lists 1917 – so thinking about it this can’t be him. Just another brave sole!!!

Once again thanks for the help.

My first message on Roots.com!

Any help relating to the Chapple's and Cleaves would be most welcome as  have gone cold.

Chapple. - Living in Totnes

Herbert Philip Chapple (b) 1892 Newton Abbot. He had several sisters and brothers Margaretta Jane (b. est 1883), Susan Ethel (b. est 1887) and possibly Jack, however there could be more. I believe their parents were William Chapple and Frances, however I cannot be sure. All children were born in the Newton Abbot area. Any information that might help would be useful.

Cleave. – Living in Totnes

John Cleave (b. est 1805) Ivybridge, married Mary and had 3 children Elizabeth, James and Thomas. He later re-married Ann (b. 1810) from Brixham and had Robert. William Charles and George.

I trying to find out more about John and his ancestry and possibly Mary and Ann’s Maiden names. Again any information would be welcome.

Regards
Simon
