many thanks Ollie I shall have a look. I think, however, my John Halsall was born earlier than that... around 1830 - 1835.  But as we all know the ages can sometimes be very distorted can't they.

Thanks for taking the time to check - all the best for Christmas

Hi there,

There is a Cottage Hospital in Hoylake but it is on the main road, which is called Birkenhead Road - if you wanted to ring them and make further enquiries their number is 0151 632 3381.  However, there is also a Grove Place, in Hoylake -  if you go to www.multimap.co.uk and use the advanced search you will get a map of its location.

Hope this helps somewhat - I would guess that your relation was born in an actual cottage if it was in Grove Place.

Good luck!

Are any of these CDs indexed and if so, is it by road, (too much to hope that its the surnames!)

unfortunately not, Keith, that is why I am stuck.

I only have him on a census once he is married - i.e. 1871 census.  I really need someone to look up the 1861 for the area and have already asked a couple of people to do this who were offering but no replies yet.  Trouble too, is that there were loads of John Halsalls in that area and still are today!!

Thanks for responding

Lancashire / Please can anyone advise?

I am researching the Halsall family line, and wow is it a common name.

I am trying to trace just WHICH John Halsall married Elizabeth Hodge, in 1863 in Scarisbrick (comes under Ormskirk).  His birth is quoted as being in Southport (or North Meols in some references) about 1830-1835.

His father was called James, that is all the information I know.

I can trace him after his wedding quite well via the censuses, but it is his birth/baptism I need to check in order to get details of his parents.

As it is such a common name, how can I research this further, and know that I am tracing the right JOHN HALSALL?    Even if I find a baptism record in the right kind of time frame, how would I know that is him?

Head going round in circles, hope someone can help!

Thanks in advance
 :)

Yorkshire (North Riding) Lookup Requests / Bagby and Thirsk PRs 1819 look up please
« on: Friday 12 November 04 10:08 GMT (UK)  »
Thirsk and Bagby PRs - look up required please?

If anyone could help me I would be grateful. I am trying to trace the marriage of George Scrafton in Bagby or Thirsk, in 1819; most probably Bagby as I have found that record on the Joiner Marriage Index.

I don't know his spouse's name but think (hope!) it was Sarah someone. If there is a PR record of a George Scrafton marrying in Bagby in 1819, please could you find it and let me know the details?

If this was found, I would love to know how old he was and then maybe I could trace a baptism record for him too.

I know there is a marriage of a Geo Scrafton in 1808 to Harriot Richardson; don't know though how this one fits in with the George listed above in 1819 or if indeed, it was the same man!

If anyone could help I would be very grateful. Many thanks.
(sorry, I put this on the main board in error too!)
