Argyllshire / Re: 1792 survey - Duke of Argyle's Estate.
« on: Thursday 22 August 19 12:18 BST (UK)  »
Campbeltown is part of Kintyre. The survey covers only that part of Kintyre that was the property of the Duke. The parishes covered are Kilcolmkill, Kilblaan, Kilkivan, Kilkerran, Kilmichael, Kilchousland, Kilkenzie, Killean and Carradale. Note that Kilcolmkill and Kilblaan form the parish of Southend; Kilkivan, Kilkerran, Kilmichael and Kilchousland form the parish of Campbeltown; and Carradale is part of Saddell & Skipness parish.

The Common Room / Re: Confused by What Is and Isn't Shown on the 1939

I can confirm that after a person in a household passes the 100 year embargo rule, the stats for everyone else in the household remain unchanged and still show them as unavailable.
Thus in the example I found with three people, P1, P2 and P3 of which the last was born 1917 but is now viewable, appear as thus:
Looking for P1 shows P1 + P2 +1 unavailable;
Looking for P2 shows P2 + P1 +1 unavailable;
Looking for P3 shows P3 + P1 +1 unavailable!

As an aside they all appear with the surname N which subsequently changes to the correct (though mis-spelt) surname. Has anyone else found this?

The Common Room / Re: 1939 National Register

You say they are not in the register but it's not possible to determine that with certainty. The most likely possibility is that the name is mis-spelt. If you know the date of birth, just search on that along with first name or maybe birthplace. There will be lots of possibles to search through but the correct one may well jump out at you with a mangled surname. The next likelihood is that their death wasn't recorded in the register, as you say you'd have to wait until their 100th birthday to find them then.

Census and Resource Discussion / Re: 1939 Register up and running (Part 3)
« on: Tuesday 22 December 15 00:00 GMT (UK)  »
Well I've tried every method I can think of and can't find my grandparents and I know exactly where they were living.

I've searched:
Using just names  (not a very common one)
Using names of both plus dates of birth
Using surnames and just the borough
Using first names and borough
Using first names and dates of birth
Searching the whole of their road.
I've found it's worth trying date of birth and borough; it will probably be a long list of results but you may well find that by scanning through it, you'll easily spot the names have been mangled during transcription.

How many different offices  in how many geographical locations  maintained the NHS register, I wonder?
I think this is the list:

Oldest people in the 1939 register: (no-one born before 1835 listed)
John C Francklow born 1835, died 1944 North Bucks aged 109
Julia Cass born 1835, died 1939 Bridgwater aged 104
There is actually one person allegedly born in each of 1825, 1824 and 1821, so respectively 114, 115 and 118 years old. Even less likely is the person born in 1964 who would thus not be born until 25 years in the future! I suspect that the validation of data entered was less than thorough.

Other odd statistics: From 1836 there are 13 survivors, from 1837 there are 20. However if you search for 1838 or later years there are 170,000, even if you search for a range of years! Maybe it's a coincidence but 1838 is the first full year of civil registration, but how could this be relevant?

Of the 41 million persons supposed to be listed there are 4,095,901 born 1916-39 (so have been un-redacted). The 1951 census at www.ons.gov.uk shows the number of people born 1916-39 was then 15,849,894, so probably 12 million of the 40 million people in the register are currently closed. It is possible to search using a last name of double quote (") and this seems to indicate there are 3.4 million records with no last name, although it's difficult to check as it's not possible to view results beyond the 100th page. Additionally there are 107,000 last names that begin with a question mark, so that looks like a possible further 3.5 million records that will never be found on any conventional search by name. Then there are the records with question marks within the name and names that have been mis-transcribed, it's a wonder anyone can be found at all. My uncle Cuthbert was listed as Catherine and female, though fortunately could still be found as his birth date was correct.

Kent Lookup Requests / Re: Great Uncle & Aunt named Giffen
« on: Tuesday 01 December 15 16:53 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Jane, the 1939 register is now published for all civilians residing in England & Wales in September that year. However those born less than 100 years ago will be redacted unless their death is recorded prior to 1991. For free preview searches, see findmypast.co.uk

Details of some births can be found as follows:
Glyn Picton HUMPHREYS, Nov 1902 Swansea, Wales
James Alexander GIFFEN, Jan 1905 Poplar
Irene Gladys HARRIS, 1905 Q2 Lewisham
Ernest William GAMBLE, Mar 1904 Poplar
I can't find Doris GAMBLE in 1939, but I believe they had 2 children.
Edith married Frederick BAKER in 1941 at Bromley and they had 3 children.
I also can't find Walter SEARBY in 1939 and Winifred is staying with Florence & Glyn HUMPHREYS in Orpington, listed as SEALY.

It looks like there were no Giffen descendants from this branch.
Regards
John
