Warwickshire / Re: Leamington Spa Church DEATH- J.Archer
« on: Tuesday 22 May 12 13:30 BST (UK)  »
Thank you Mudwhisk. Obvious that it is I had not thought about checking the death certificate I will do that next . Can it be done on-line? What had occured to me is that if Joseph had fallen off the church spire, that it would have been of significance that would have merited a line or two in the local paper. That poses another question or two. What was the local Leamington Spa newspaper about 1848 and is there an Archive somewhere where this could be checked?

Warwickshire / Leamington Spa Church DEATH- J.Archer
« on: Saturday 19 May 12 18:05 BST (UK)  »
I am over 70 and a family story has always been that my relative Joseph Archer (Mason/labourer) fell off the church spire in Leamington Spa and was killed. He was born in 1806 and he had children till about 1848 so if the story was true he would have died after 1848. Can anyone throw any light on this story? Is it true?

Sarco, thanks for your reply. I certainly didn't expect one from Australia. What an interesting story you have. Now I havn't got a George Beers born so early yet on my tree so I have popped him into the pending tray. I do have a few SMEDLEY characters on the fringe of my tree for example:- JANE SMEDLEY b. 1858 who married JOHN FAIRBROTHER b 1852 in Sawley and who married 25 Dec. 1879 at All Saints Church, Derby. Any use?

Leicestershire / Re: Squire of Leicestershire - MURDERER!
« on: Thursday 10 November 11 08:25 GMT (UK)  »
Thankyou caroleW for the question. I have no idea of dates but estimating backwards it must have been before 1800. The TOWNSENDS all came from Norfolk from way back so I have tended to discount them and so I have always thought the BIRLEY name might be the one to follow but from 1796 they were in Derbyshire, so it must have been before then. Also and it may be a red hearing: there are places named BIRLEY(some different spellings) in Leicestershire and Rutland, parts of which were in Leicestershire at one time. My attempts at getting to the bottom of this have failed so far so I was hoping some Leicestershire historian might just remember a similar story.

Leicestershire / Squire of Leicestershire - MURDERER!
« on: Wednesday 09 November 11 17:09 GMT (UK)  »
I am over 70 and I remember my aunt telling me how some ancestor who was "a" or "the" squire of Leicester/shire had come home to his stately home to find his wife otherwise engaged with a man. He allegedly killed the wife's lover and fled abroad. My aunt insisted that the money and property from the estates passed into Chancery and would look in the appropriate newspapers each week for news of any inheritance. I am sorry I didn't question her story in more detail when I had the chance and I know that every family has a similar (often fictitious)  story lost in the past, but I have tried various attempts to delve into Leicestershire history to find any similar matching historical facts to support my aunt's story; as yet to no avail. Her parent's surnames were TOWNSEND and BIRLEY. Does anyone in Leicestershire know of any Squire getting himself in such a mess or has anyone any suggestions of how I could try to get to the bottom of this story. Lost inheritance is not my motive simply finding if we were related to a man of some importance would be the goal for me and of course confirming that Auntie Elsie had not actually lost her marbles. Fingers crossed someone can help!

Thanks, Copperbeech5. It took me ages to sort out the Beer/s family of Sawley and Long Eaton in the first place but your new fellow has thrown me and I am now involved with checking all my Beer/s data. I seem to have two of them born in 1835 and 1839; probably cousins. I think it is always good to check data from time to time because it is so easy to make mistakes in this game. Thanks for taking the time to respond. Cheers.

Derbyshire / BEERS family at Sawley and Long Eaton

My G.Grandad Charles William Townsend b. 1848 moved from Hempnall in Norfolk to Sawley and married Mary Beers. Her fatherWilliam Beers and Charles Townsend eventually ran coal barges from Sawley Warf. I have done extensive research on the Beers family. Many descendants remained in the Sawley and Long Eaton area and some moved away. I wonder if any of the ones who may still be living in the district have photographs of any Beers relatives or of the canal barges? I have my fingers crossed. BEERS relatives could be STOPPARD,DODD, KILBOURNE etc, etc.
