As suggested below, this Jane Maughan listed in 1841 is Eliza Jane (reg mar 1838 Louth 14 432) and christened 1 apr 1838 @ St Gabriel, Binbrook.
She appears in 1851, 1861, 71 & 81 census as single.

I have a good history of the Maughan family, back to the Michael you mention. I have done a full census study and have ordered several certificates. If you would like to compare notes please contact again.

Hello,
I thought I would write to see if anyone researching Crowther in Leeds area knew of my particular George Crowther

George Crowther (born Birstal) age 43 in 1861, agent for manufacturing chemist. lived in Holbeck, Leeds with wife Elizabeth and children Martha, Louisa and Mary (address looks like Mansfield House)

George Crowther age 50 ? in 1871, is a cloth fuller. He lived in Batley, Dewsbury with wife Elizabeth, daughters Mary( single), Martha (married) and Louisa (married). all the spouse and children are in the resdience

George Crowther is my 3G grandfather.

I am interested if you know of this line?

Many thanks

your father was the son of Elsie Wraight and John W Shepherd

Hence your middle name.

I have lots in on Wraight including census which is always interesting.

I have sent a message with more.

Thanks Anna,

I have post other posts with other snippets in the hope someone knows the Shepherds (there will be living descendants)

I understand, but it's only fair to fellow Rootschatters to cross-link to other relevant posts, and to give all relevant information that you already have (e.g. you said you had "no info" on JW Shepherd, but we now know that you have at least something about him from the marriage certificate) in order to save them spending time looking up material you already have or which others are simultaneously finding, unbeknownst to them, on other threads.

I hope you do find living descendants with whom you can make contact, but for as long as a thread is live on Rootschat many unrelated Rootschatters will be beavering away out of the goodness of their hearts trying to assist you, so the clearer any request the better it is all round.

Hope you enjoy the site as much as we all do :)

Anna

I take your point, I should have been more up front with the facts I do have, I am sorry for that. In my mind I know very little, virtually nothing about the JW Shepherd but as he had 3 children I was hoping that someone had linked into the family history.

Sorry to anyone who has done some research on this, I will be checking them all again.
Jon
PS great site, can't believ I got replies so soon

Thanks Hugh,

You found information that took me ages to find :) For a long time I thought that record, you have also unearthed was the JW Shepherd I was looking for and it gave me more leads with respect to his place of residence, maybe birth and his age.

However, on the marr cert he is listed as sergeant East Yorks reg, Fulford barracks. This is also this is confirmed on the cert for birth of his 1st son (Fredrick) in 1916. He is listed as a army gym instructor also. He survived the war and was a home guard and rifle range warden (so my mum tells me in WW2).

Incidentally, paid some money for someone to search the army records but it did not turn up anything concrete.

I am hoping that of his 3 boys some of their offspring will know the family history. The problem with searching census is I have a rough age (b 1890) and I know his fathers name...but I lack any support info like place or other family members...consequentially there are several possible (maybe as many as 8-10) candidates.

Thanks again
Jon

Thanks for your efforts though.

Thanks Richard

You are right. I actually have the marr cert for Elsie and JWS...I should have said that.

It tells me very little about the John William Shepherd history (listed in army with barracks address)

Although I have age and his fathers name (also John William Shepherd) there is not enough to trace him in census, and believe me I have tried (spent longer on this one than all the rest put together)

I thought if anyone recognises the William CW Shepherd then they might have/know of,  the family history.

I need to look into the other records you have unearthed, many thanks for this.
