Wiltshire / Re: BATHE family = confusion!

I know this thread was started 10 years ago and so the confusion may have been resolved already but if anyone is still interested, I think I've cracked it.

Sarah was William's first cousin once removed. Her father, John Bathe, was the son of Robert Bathe, brother of Joseph Bathe, William's father.

I have done quite a bit of work on this family and would be happy to share

The highlighted bit of this scrawl was transcribed as "grandson" but a quick look at the ages of the household shows this to be impossible. Judging by a capital "J" lower down the page, I've taken this to be "Journeyman"

That's why whoever/whatever did the transcription doesn't actually KNOW that Fanny Arbuckle aged 6 can't be a grandmother!

Humans can't be trusted to spot the impossibility of 6-year-old grandmothers; 60-year-old new mums; or multiple births spread over three or four months. You can tell that by the number of trees with these absurdities on Ancestry - often the result of blind acceptance of poor transcriptions but more often the result of wishful thinking.

The "Long S" usually foxes the more inexperienced transcriber - Rufsell for Russell etc - but is understandable, as are, indeed, many transcription errors.

My biggest bugbear is that unwillingness of major sites to admitted transcriptions were wrong in the first place and keep the entries indexed under the original transcriptions, even when they are clearly wrong. The sites' users have gone to much trouble to bother sending in corrections and can provide "chapter and verse" as to why corrections are necessary.

They might suggest there is an alternative - but why not get rid of the totally misleading version?

Some of the sites are also unwilling to accept the version provided by the transcriber. I volunteered to transcribe for one site and was given "modern" registers of marriage - those where the brides' and grooms' surnames appear not only in the box completed by the registrar, but also as their own signatures. I looked at both (and also the registrars' entry of the fathers' names) and my transcriptions were "bounced" if I chose their own signatures (often very clear signatures) over the scrawl of the registrar which could be interpreted differently.

Berkshire / Re: bucklebury families

Hi Cyndy

Think you may have missed a generation. Rev John Morton of Bucklebury died in 1871 and his wife Sarah in 1877. It was their grandson John (father of Rosa and [Charles] Bernard among others) who was the Baptist Minister of Great Grandsen but he wasn't there until sometime between 1885 and 1888, so a photo of John and Sarah at Great Grandsen is unlikely. You might, however, have one of the younger John Morton and his wife Mary

Dear Moira

Sorry - can't help with this one. The marriage date for Hazel (1968) is possible with a 1944 date for the marriage of Ernest and Ivy but.... I too can't find any birth record for Hazel or Martin (even outside the UK with current on-line records) but suppose Ernest was a serviceman in, say, Germany, immediately after the War, then it is possible that Martin and Hazel weren't born in Britain - although how you find that out if you are no close to the family, I don't know

Good luck
Peter

Hi

I'm interested in Rufus-es and have those that are definitely related to me in my own tree on Ancestry, and those I can't prove are related on another tree - called "Rufus", not surprisingly.

Ernest Edward William Rufus appears on my Rufus tree (ie no relation or, rather, no relationship yet proved) and while I have his marriage to Ivy Ellen Nugent i have found no indication of any off-spring.

One of the problems with Ancestry is, it seems, that who people join during a 14-day free trial or similar then can't be contacted once those 14 days are up - same with anyone who has let their sub lapse.

As you are probably aware, many Ancestry trees (particularly those built by the short-timers) are not strictly accurate. What are the names of the alledged off-spring of Ernest and Ivy? I'll try to see if I have them elsewhere on my Rufus tree.

Thanks for those suggestions, Susan, but neither give the apartment number

canada411 just gives the street number, whitepages just gives the street!
