New Zealand Completed Requests / Grimmett
« on: Wednesday 13 March 13 21:34 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to establish if a relation with a family name of Grimmett is related to the famous cricketer Clarence Victor Grimmett. I understand that he was born in New Zealand on Christmas Day 1891 in Caversham, Dundin, South Island & his parents were Richard James Grimmett & Mary née McDermott.

I wonder if they or the family originated from England, would anyone be good enough to see if you could find a marriage &/or birth for Richard James Grimmett.

Thank you

London and Middlesex / Stepney Marriage

I am interested in a marriage in Stepney in 1720, the parish register of St Dunstan & All Saints shows the marriage & states that the bridgegroom was from M.E. New Town, in fact there are a number of others in the register from there.

Would I be right in assuming this was Mile End?

Thank you for your reply.

I think you must have the explanation there, the first one I found on the GRO index the second was from the  non-conformist records on Ancestry & therefore did not need to look at the GRO to find it. Since your reply I have re-looked at the GRO & this marriage is not shown.

Having looked at the Methodist one I notice that it says by "Certificate" rather than by Banns or Licence as I would expect would that confirm things?

Many thanks

England / Married twice
« on: Sunday 13 March 11 20:37 GMT (UK)  »
I originally found a marriage I was looking for in parish church Berkshire in 1870 but I discovered yesterday that another marriage took place the year before in a Wesleyan Methodist Chapel in London for the same couple. There is no question that they are the same people as full names, ages, parents & occupation all match.

It is possible that one of them was a Methodist the other C of E I do not know for sure but if that was the case was it allowable to actually marry twice rather than maybe just have a blessing in the C of E church?

Could anyone suggest why a second marriage took place?

Hello Hugh,

Thank you so much for your reply, I was thinking of going to The National Archives tomorrow morning to look at some of Milly's suggestions so I will order the ship articles of agreement as you suggest I did not know there was such a document.

You have been very helpful, thank you again.

Thank you so much Milly for all this wonderful information, I don't know how you managed to find so much but I now understand the events so much better.

Sorry to have kept you up so late.

Thank you again.
