Travelling People / Re: Need Advice on connecting HEDGES brothers
« on: Friday 12 December 08 13:38 GMT (UK)  »
Hi again everyone.
Sorry to be slow in reply but I have been away for nearly a week.
Did Deb manage to find out who Janice is related to, as I am very keen to contact her.
I have noticed on the certificate of marriage of Alvey Hedges to Alfred Cumbers I think that she must of lied about her age by a couple of years to make herself 21. Also one of the witnesses was Olive Hedges who I presume was her sister. The other witness Harry Shepherd. Does anybody know who he was?
The Hedges line down to my family is as Jenny said, from James Hedges b1816.
Thank you all again for your help.
Regards
Keith

Hey Girls:
You're both out for the night.  Anyway, I contacted a distant relative who has been doing a chart and who sent me some attachments that I can't open a few years ago.  I have contacted her again tonight.  She told me that a couple of years ago that she could trace back to Samuel Hedges in 1771.  Who knows, maybe this is the father of all the brothers!!!!!!!  Anyway, looks like we are going to solve it one way or the other.
As for me, I was raised in Romford, Essex, and most of my mother's immedate family lived in Collier Row.  Grandfather Cumbers and Alvey owned an old pub called the Rose and Crown (according to my mother), and also owned the land near Clock House Lane, that became a housing tract after WWII.  Romford must have been a little village in those days.
When I get the chart, I will paste it on the site for you.  J.

Hi
Thanks for the information and I shall certainly look for connections between the families. At the moment I am feeling a little overwhelmed with all the information as I am new to this type of research.
If I do find any connections I shall come back to you
Many Thanks
Keith Cumbers

Hi Jenny
I don't think that I shall even attempt to research the Hedges line judging by the headaches you have had. I thought that I would print off all the messages on this subject and ended up with 166 pages to read at my leisure.
I have got about a quarter of the way through and there is some very interesting stuff. I saw some references to IGI christenings/baptisms. Can you tell me where I can find this as some time ago I found an interesting website for gypsy baptisms in Kent where I got some good information. I also noted that you live in Kent which is strange since I spent 30 years living in north Kent (must be the gypsy blood in us taking us back to our roots). If you are registered with GenesReunited I can open my family tree to you so that you can get some idea of where I come from. I am rubbish with computers and I just fiddle about but I am going to see my daughter tomorrow and her husband is a bit of Nerd so I shall get him to list some of the old photographs I have, although I am not 100% sure who the people are. One other little snippet I remember from my youth, is that an old boy in a pub in Ongar told me that Alvey Cumbers (Hedges) used to go around Collier Row in a cart pulled by an old brown and white mare. No relevance really but it might tie in with the comment that she was a travelling carpet saleswoman.
Thanks for your help and I shall get back to reading up on the pages I printed off.
Keith

Hi Jenny
I am very much groping in the dark with this whole family history thing. It seems that most of the ancestors used a different name to their given name and grandad's wife used the surnames Yelding and Hilden at different times. My uncle told me that this was to avoid the taxman.(not that any of them paid a penny in tax in their lives.) Granddad was born Alfred Cumbers on 14th Sept 1985 at Teston near Maidstone in a traveller's caravan and he died on 2nd July 1957 at Elm Road Collier Row. I presume that Alvey was related to your Hedges as they all seemed to be Licensed Hawkers and travelled from place to place together. (This is what my Uncle told me). I have not been able to find any BDM certs for my grandad's siblings Olive, Alice, Phyllis and Henry so if you find any info on them I would be pleased to know. I haven't got as far as going back to the Hedges side yet but I might get there eventually. Which of Alvey and Alfred's children is your ggrandparent?
I am going around in circles so I haven't got as far as drawing up a family tree but I shall get there eventually. I cannot really follow the threads very well but was it you who mentioned the Old Rose and Crown.? I would love to know where it was as my Dad was born there but I never heard it mentioned when I was living at home. ( long time ago now)
Thanks Keith

Travelling People / Cumbers, Hedges, Yelding Families

I am trying to research my family (Cumbers) but 2 generations married into Romany Gypsy families and I can find very little information in the BDRM websites. Does anybody have any ideas how I can find out the information I require.?
Also my greatgrandfather Alfred Cumbers and his wife Alvey (Hedges) are shown as living at The Old Rose and Crown Collier Row but I have not found any records of such a Pub. I am sure that it must have existed since it is shown on my father's birth cert. in 1919 and I also have an old an old photographic postcard from an "ever loving sister-in-law" to my granny at the address. I can only think that this sister-in-law is one one of my granddad's sisters either Eliza b. 1887, Olive b. 1891, Alice b. 1893 or Phyllis b.1897. Has anyone any information on these people or his brother Henry Cumbers b.1899

Hi there-  I am not quite sure if this is what you are looking for, but my great-great-grandmother's name was Albey Hedges, and she married Alfred Cumbers, and was located in Romford, Essex & Herts.  She reportedly was a traveller, but that is all the information that I have on her.  If she is related to the brothers, please let me know, as this would help fill in some gaps.  She had about 12 children and seems to have given birth to Elias (1885) in Tralon, Kent, Eliza (1887) Southend-on sea, and Olive (1891) & Alice (1892) in Flamstead, Herts.  It would be wonderful to know more.
Hi
This is first time I have used Rootschat so basically I do not know what I am doing but I shall give it a try.
The Elias you have is my granddad but to confuse things on his birth and death certs he was Alfred but the rest of the time he seems to have used the name Elias. He was born in Teston Kent and died in Romford in 1957. His mother I think was called Alvey and not Albey and this seems to be logical since my grandad's daughter was also called Alvey.
