Lancashire Lookup Requests / Re: 1891 Census Wigan Barratt
« on: Sunday 07 December 08 08:09 GMT (UK)  »
Hello Judith
Thank you very much for that.  Would you be prepared to send me a copy of Amy's birth cert if I give you an email to send it to - failing that would you be happy to give me the details - DOB etc please?  Also of interest is the fact that William was first married to Frances Snell - Some Snells from Devon were also living here - I wonder if there was in fact any connection or pure coincidence - who were Frances' parents / siblings for example?
We are not sure whether John was the actual father of Amy in spite of the will and death cert - John Richard's wife had a child who died as an infant but John & Elizabeth (Ross nee Williams - I put Holman before but that was her mother's maiden name!) didn't have children - not impossible but seems somewhat unlikely if Elizabeth had already had a child  and John fathered an illegitimate child that they as a couple wouldn't have had children - they were married in their early 20s.
Best wishes Jennifer

Hello Judith I know this is some years after the first discussions but perhaps it might help some of your queries and may be someone can throw a little light for me
re William & Thomasine Barratt of Beer Devon - in 1861 Census Wales name looks like Channon but is Thomasine I think.  They had a daughter Mary who married James Richards of Truro Cornwall.  James' brother John and most of James siblings and his mother emigrated to Australia goldfields in early 1850s (father Ralph died 1850).  John Richards and his wife didn't have any children out here in Australia but after Elizabeth (Ross nee Holman) died in 1904 John returned to England several times dying in Truro 1911 and buried in his father's grave.
The witness to his death and the executor of his will was Amy Louisa Schofield wife of George Henry Schofield and identified as John Richards' daughter.
Amy appears to have been born and married as Amy Louisa Barratt - identification of her and George in Wigan in 1891/1901 Census matches address on death certificate.
This puts Amy as born c1868 Shropshire in one Census and Wigan in the other.  There appears to be only one satisfactory birth entry at the moment - Amy Louisa Barratt bn Montgomery Dec qtr 1868 11b/225 - she and George md Wigan Dec qtr 1890 8c/161
The only satisfactory Amy I can find in 1871/1881 Census is a granddaughter living with widowed Thomasine Barratt - recorded as 4yrs of age in both cases (same child but 14? another grand daughter?)   I suspect Amy to be the daughter of Elizabeth.
The interest is this - was Amy a biological daughter of John Richards or a 'ward'?  It is not thought that John went back to England until after 1904 although we know one of James sons came out to live in Australia so perhaps Amy's mother came out and was 'sent' back home?!
I have no family connection but am trying to tie up a few loose ends for our local historical museum in Foster Victoria Australia where John Richards was a very well respected member of the community for many years
Who was Amy's mother and what actual connection was John Richards to Amy Louisa Barratt if indeed this is the same family
Maybe someone can help me and hopefully this information may give someone else some leads
Thank you
Jennifer
