I am no longer in contact with the Abrams family.   I researched them originally as a favour.  I think you need to send  your messages to Cantabs.

Thank you.

Absolutely.   I could kick myself for not being interested enough at the time to get to know more.

However, if  you conclude that there is a connection between the families, I have info re the Hands going back to the 16th century.   Let me know if you would like to see it.  In fact I'm not sure if it isn't on rootschat.  I can't remember  but I certainly got it with the aid of the very helpful people on this excellent site.   You might like to delve further into my posts.   Hands is not a common name and I'm pretty sure that there must be a connection.

Once again, good luck!

Pam

He sounds interesting.  I haven't found anybody that illustrious  in my family's past :).    He doesn't sound like any Hands I know but, hey, he may be the exception that proves the rule!
Good luck with your research.

I don't have a lot of info re William.    He was my grandfather's elder brother and the last we hear of him is in the 1871 Census when he was 12 years old and where it says he was born in bishopswearmouth, durham.   At that time they were living in Heworth, Durham.   His siblings were Joseph, Henry (my grandfather) Mary and Margaret.   Another daughter, Elizabeth, was born 7 years later.   He doesn't figure in the 1881 Census when he had probably already left home.   For further info you might consult Ancestry.com-
Good luck with your research and contact me again if you need more info.

Hi everybody,

Here's an update on what I have found out.  Sidney Frederick (now calling himself Sidney Canham Abrams) died in 1991 in Melksham, Wilts.   It seems, therefore, that there was a Wiltshire connection.   At Monica's suggestion I contacted a Zambian (former S.Rhodesia) site because had Anita told me that her parents had died in 1947 and were buried in Bulawayo.   I scoured lists of burials  in 33 cemeteries but couldn't find them.   However, I have been contacted by a lady who feels that  she and Anita may be related and who has suggested that Anita's mother was born in Taung.   Anita's granddaughter will be following all this up when next she comes to visit.

Bruce Walter Abrams was born in 1932.

Many thanks to you all for your efforts.

Hi,

Could you tell me how I can get info from Bulawayo ref the deaths of the above in 1947, please.   I should also like to know  how I can obtain a birth certificate for  the son of BRUCE WALTER ABRAMS and JACQUELINE DAY, also born in Bulawayo  cerca 1957.  Perhaps you could let me know whether Bruce is still living.

Many thanks in advance,

Paz

I'm sorry it's taken me so long to reply but I have only just been able to contact my friend again.   Her name is Anita Eve Abrams (Patmore).   However, she was born in S.Rhodesia and was married there so I doubt there will be any records containing information about her.   Incidentally, I have now been able to find info regarding her brother, Sidney.   He was actually using his mother's name and so was known as Sidney Canham Abrams.  now there only remains to find her other brother, Bruce Walter.

Can you advise me about any good African genealogical sites?

Regards,

Paz
