Mayo / Jane Kennedy 1855
« on: Thursday 11 February 10 22:47 GMT (UK)  »
A long shot but here it goes, A Scottish Poor law record in Paisley states that Jane Kennedy was born in 1855 in Slayin County Mayo which is then crossed out and Meath put in its place.
This relative was born in Ireland but grew up in Scotland. People have checked Meath for me as I guessed it would Slane but nothing has born fruit, her father was Charles Kennedy 1808 (Dublin) a soldier 87th foot and her grandfather John Kennedy Blacksmith.
Its like a needle in a haystck, but this is the only link I have to my Irish Ancesters, can you help, im way stuck. Her mother was Elizabeth Andrew of Scotland

Kind regards Kennedy 1

Good luck with your search my great great grandmother was also in the poorhouse in 1881, I found The poor law records held in the paisley Library and it held some details as to why she turned there for help, amazing documents, very sad really as she wasn't always poor, she was buried in a paupers grave in Hawkhead cemetery

Thank you kindly once again, I have now logged on to The Irish History foundation. And I have a friend who is going to check passenger lists for me, to see if The Kennedys are on there. Thank you for your patience, afraid I'm a novice when it comes to searching Ireland, it can be challenging.

Hi Nora thank you, I don't know if that Jane Kennedy is any connection to my Kennedy family, I do know her birth est is fairly accurate. Her parents are on the 1851 census of Scotland, at that point they only have 2 sons John and Charles. I'm certain for some reason they travel back Ireland. They turn up on 1861 census of Scotland with a Daughter Jane aged 6 born in Ireland.
Paisley poor law record of my Great Great Gran Kennedy, she has to state depends for income and were they were born, Charles my grandad was born in Lanark Scotland, Jane born around 1855 Slayin, Meath, no mention of John so I assumed he died, possibly the reason they went to Ireland, or John may even have died in Ireland. The document origanally states Slayin Mayo but then Mayo is crossed out and Meath in it's place,
Please forgive my lack of Knowledge of Ireland, but what is the brs, Birth registers ? of Ireland

Thank you for your help
kind regards

Hi Shane I will note that info down, I am a novice to the country of Ireland and Im trying to do a little crash course, Jane Kennedy definately was born in Ireland. Paisley poor records stated by her mother that is were she was born, record is written Jane Kennedy born Slayin (spelling) County Mayo crossed out and Meath wrote next to it, Prodestants they were.
All Scottish census records state Ireland as her birth 1855 /6,  her siblings born Scotland.
Death records give John Kennedy as the father of Charles 1808 no mention of mother .
Thank you for your help

This is the only info I have about my Great x 2 grandfather Charles Kennedy's birthplace, until recently I only had Dublin, his military record says St Marks Parish, His father was John Kennedy Blacksmith,
Charles was born 1807/1808 in that Parish.
I have tried to find things out and have not a clue about, Dublin/Ireland parishes and so forth. I'm completely in the dark. How far is Slane Meath from Dublin for example, I have a family link there in 1855.
Does anybody wish to give me some direction or have they any 1800 Dublin/Meath Kennedys ?
John Kennedy is my missing link to complete my 4 generations family tree.

Kennedy 1

Not sure how to down load stuff from NA site will have ago, he was definatley born St Marks Parish Dublin
I have  a ref to Newport on the papers ties in with your dates. The regiment was commanded by General L Doyle/Dayle.
Scrawled 0n a record for 1846 right at the bottom is Paisley in big letters. There must have been some kind of Depot there, that was where he married his wife , he married in a church in Paisley 1843.

His final paper says discharge made in Chatham 1847 at this point 136 Private Charles Kennedy leaves the 87th foot.

Thanx Kennedy 1

By Ken thanks , makes some sense of dates I have . I am bashing my brains out with this guy, it is so important to find his history. My Great Great Grandfather. He did indeed serve in Mauritus and the dates you kindly gave me line up with his time in Scotland. Just paid a lump to KEW for his discharge papers, didnt give next of kin, but did tell me about Mauritius and  a "Good conduct Medal" I do know in 1844 he was stationed in Fort George Nairn in Inverness as he had a son born there. He met my great great gran in Paisley and they married there, 1843 her father served with the 2nd Battalion 4th fencibles of Caitness, so I imagine thats the link  of how they met?

Thank you so much kENNEDY 1  :)
