Thank you very much for the information, that certainly looks as if it’s the house from the 1951 advertisement which links the name to a number. My family had moved from there before then so the sale would not have been connected to them.

Regards,

Terry

Hello,

I wonder if anyone could help please. Via Google  :-\ I'm trying to identify (if it still exists) my father's and grandfather's house (family name Curtis) on Water Eaton Road from the 1939 General Register. The address given is Albionhurst but for this, and all the adjacent properties there are no numbers only house names. Does anyone know if these were houses which were built and named by the developer or local authority as was common in some areas? The entry listed next to theirs is "No 4 Estate House" which doesn't seem to help. Further down the entries is a Fairlight 10 Water Eaton Road but that doesn't seem to exist now, would that have been the other side of the railway and perhaps where Albionhurst was?

Many thanks

Terry

@SarahT

Thank you for your kind reply and Facebook information. I’ll take a look at those groups.

Who knows, your 2x GGF may well have bought bread from my 3x GGF!

@Capetown

Thank you very much for your replies. My family (Avery) had gone from Number 55 by 1871 and moved to Highbury Houses, Cotham. But it's interesting to see that Robert Jamieson was a Confectioner living at that address in 1911 as well. There is no connection to Jamieson in the family.

I don't know if it was a shop or not which is why I was hoping for some pre war photos. John Avery Baker and Confectioner lived at Lower Church Lane in 1841, Hunt's 1849/50 directory has him at 21 Upper Maudlin St, as does Slaters 1852 (so I assume that was the business premises) 1851 census at 55 St Michaels Hill and in 1861

They were a large family with 14 children so would have needed a few rooms!

Hello,

Would anybody know what happened to the houses at 55 - 59 St Michaels Hill Bristol please? There is just an empty space there now (according to Google.)  Bombed during the war perhaps?  My family (Avery - Confectioner) lived at 55 during the 1840-1870 period. Of course any old street photos would be very helpful if anyone has any, or can recommend a source for any.

Thank you

Terry

Mine didn't work on Firefox or Safari (both on a MAC) but it seems to have been fixed (for now) as I can see all items again.

Perhaps worth reporting as it might get them to do something about it. I asked for reduction in membership until they fixed it as they weren't offering the service I pay for, but they weren't interested - which is par for the course for them in my experience.
