Thanks GeoffE

That's interesting. You are right just checked it on Wikipedia. My mother would not have got the Avoca link from Ballykissangel as she died in 1974 and the series was not broadcast until 1996

Hi Anne-Marie

Re William born Ireland 1830
I remember my mother talking about a place called Avoca but don't know whether that was in relation to the Murray side of the family who Margaret Ann b1861 married into or the Greer side of the family who my grandfather (if he was my bilogical grandfather) married. I looked at the Toppings up to 1901. Are you Nora's decendant. I would be intrested in photos and am willing to share mine if you like but I think I have to solve the mystery of my mother's birth first as otherwise they are not really my ancestors. It all takes so much time.
My grandparents somehow got to Otley in Yorkshire from Cumbria and I don't know why. Maybe it was because there was no work in Cumbria. My grandfather ended up being a tannery worker in Otley. Are the Topping descendats still in Cumbria?
I will let you know f I find out anything else

Hi
I'm a bit new to this but here goes

I think  William McGarry is also my GG Grandfather

His daughter  Margaret Ann McGarry married Hugh Murray in 1882 10b 765. They had 6 children per 1901 census. The oldest was William Thomas b1883. He died on 27/2/1951. He was married to a Mary Greer. I can find no record of their marriage but I have her death certificate that says she was William's widow and I have family photographs. William and Mary were my mothers parents. My mother was born 15/12/1928 in Frizington according to her passport but I can find no record of her birth. I have even been to the record office in Whitehaven. Maybe she was adopted as her mother Mary would have been 44 at the time she was born. My mother died in 1974 so I cannot ask her and my father died in 1984 so I cannot ask him. I was not aware that she was adopted when I was growing up though I do know she had a younger adopted sister. It's all very curious and I hope to find out someday
