World War One / George Dodds
« on: Sunday 16 December 12 20:53 GMT (UK)  »
My grandfather was George Dodds - also known as George Singlewood Dodds. He was born in County Durham in 1881/1882 & served in WW1; I would like to find out about his military record as all I have is a photograph of him on a horse which was pulling a gun carriage; I think he may have served in the DLI or Northumberland Hussars but he would never speak of his war experiences so I have little to go on.
Can anyone interested in military history suggest how to fing records?
Many thanks, Lizzieann

Northumberland Lookup Requests / James Dodds
« on: Sunday 09 December 12 20:24 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find the parents of James Dodds - born Morpeth 1837; he married Dorothy Dodds & had a son John Singlewood Doods born 1859;
The family moved to Willington, Co Durham where John was born.
My maiden name was Singlewood but there is some family confusion as to when this name was accepted and Dodds not used!
Anyone with this in their family?

Durham / Re: Ralph Emmerson of Willington
« on: Monday 10 August 09 14:43 BST (UK)  »
Hello Martin,
Thanks for your search ---I know the parents of  Mary nee Hedley who was married to my "illusive" Ralph Emmerson-- they were John Hedley b 1784 in Staffordshire & Elizabeth b 1787 in Durham.

I just cannot find confirmation of Ralph`s parents nor any record of his birth /baptism

 Will keep searching,

Hello Gary,
I know for definite that Ralph was born in 1816 - got him on the 1841 census; I`ve checked the "1818" Ralph just in case but that`s not him.
I know that Ralph`s wife came from an army family -she was born in Paris after  Waterloo. I wonder if Ralph`s father also went into the army & he was born abroad --I`m really just thinking now of all possibilities !

Thank you Raine for all the fascinating material--I`m sure we must be related way back ; the problem is that Emmerson is quite a common name in Weardale & they all semmed to have had lots of sons with the same Christian name! My other side of the family had a most unusual name which made my research a lot easier!

Hello Gary,
Thanks for info - I`m still unable to find Ralph`s birth certificate to determine that John & Elizabeth were his parents. I`ve tried all the usual channels without success. Any ideas ??

Durham Lookup Requests / Re: Where was Quarry Burn, Hunwick?
« on: Sunday 07 June 09 19:46 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
Quarry Burn farm was at Quarry Hill about 1 mile from Hunwick ( from Bishop Auckland turn left in the village past Wear View) . When I went to school in the 1950`s Elizabeth & Mary Heslop lived at Quarry Burn farm - they were teachers ;I think they had an older sister called Margaret;
Any use to you? Regards , Lizzieann

Hello Diddy,
I found the Sunderland Emmersons too - but I don`t think they are the family of Ralph whom I`m looking for; I`ll have to try church records again as I feel Stanhope in Weardale is where they came from.
Regards, Lizzieann
