I haven’t been active for a while and missed your 2024 query. Most of my McLarens from Kirk Lane immigrated to Kent County, Ontario in 1831/32. Must now check out the ship you mention.
Have you found the 1814 Map of the Moss?

Since it seems Alexander McNair was named and/or fessed up to being the father I'm wondering if anyone knows the customs of the day. Would the couple have been forced to marry? Whether or not he married the mother would the child have his surname?
Since tge geography and timing are right I'm still working to see if this Sarah McNair could have found her way to Canada .... And become my GG Grandma McDonald.

Thanks for this and the nudge to SP.  I had enough credits and found the baptism record. "Illegitimate child" born to Alexander Mc Nair and Sarah Clarke. I am too old to be tech savy but tried to search for marriage for these two and or to others - nothing.  Searched for death for Sarah Clarke in case - nothing.  So obviously hard to find sibs.  Would the child have been given his surname even if parents weren't married?
Will try to match bapt date and look for emigration to Canada.

Looking for parents or siblings of Sarah McNair b abt 1810.  Married Donald McDonald. Both emigrated to Ontario, Canada. Not certain if marriage was in Scotland  Or Canada.  Sarah died 1883 in Ontario.

Thanks for getting in touch. I am related to John James Hartnoll through his father John Hartnoll who was brother to my GG grandma Mary Ann Hartnoll (m. Edward Turner Bishop) My dad, their Ggrandson is also still living at age 95.

Interestingly I traveled to Devon from Canada this May and spent time in Pilton and Barnstaple even Braunton where the earlier generations originated.

Greetings from Canada,  Anne, I was happy to see your offer here. I have been trying to get birth/baptismal information for Phillip Edward Bishop. The BMD index has him born Apr/May/June 1846 registered in St. Thomas District  vol x  P. 243.
Does the district refer to your parish or to a geographical area?  I ask because although his parents were married at St. Mary Major, Exeter in 1845 the rest of his siblings were baptized by Wesleyan Circuit clergy nr. Barnstaple where the parents moved a couple of years later.
Later on his record of entry to the USA has his birth as Feb 1846 (no day).  His parents were Edward Turner Bishop and Mary Ann Hartnoll.

If you can check your births/baptisms I would be very happy.  Thank-you in advance.   Jan
